I agree with the quote. If you don't have faith in yourself, you won't do much with your life. Faith is what leads people to action.

I completely agree with it. But it is antithetical to fundamentalist Christianity. Reason is, to be a fundie you have to hate yourself. You have to believe that you are the worst, vilest, most unclean sinner on the face of the planet. This is why most fundies have personal complexes and low self-esteems. Most fundies also think that anyone who truly loves or believes in themselves is a "humanist" who's going straight to hell.

No, believing in myself has nothing to do with my ability to live. Every human needs water and food, and in most cases some sort of shelter and clothing as needed. Religious beliefs have nothing do with the ability to live and function and reproduce. In fact, many people live vey well without having to worry about the stigmas and dictates and strict directives many of the world's religions require in order to practice it. Unfortunately, most religions have a implied requirement that you must believe in their particular religion, and to me often negates the value of the individual and his/her ability to think and act for themselfs.

Believing in yourself is basically believing that you can do anything. But you can't. There are very natural limitations on all of us.
That's like saying "If I believe in myself, I can jump across the Grand Canyon." I don't care how much you believe in yourself, it doesn't make it true. And that's no more ridiculous than saying "if I believe in myself, I can be the CEO of a major corporation." Believing doesn't make it so. The combination of attitude and the active application of resources result in consequences.
The most important thing in order to live is to fear the one true God who provides for our needs so that we may live.

Hey Megami :-)
I am an unbeliever (so: no religion) and I really appreciate that quote.
I think/feel/believe that believing in oneself is the real key in life, for any of us, Humans living on Earth-planet.
I know that my life will be much better when I fully believe in myself.

Hmmmm, sort of, to believe in yourself as in respect yourself, yes. But, if it involves pride then no. In the quest for enlightenment, the first thing you must do is give up pride, it causes an attachment to the ego, and makes Nirvana impossible.

I cannot agree with that statement as a Christian.
Jeremiah 17:9 says this:
"The (human) heart is deceitful above all things, and desparately wicked: who can know it?
Verse 10 continues with a response from God:
"I the Lord search the heart..."
The meaning here is that we should not trust our own hearts, because given extreme circumstances, we may go to extreme measures for self-preservation and motives.
King David in the Psalms says the humans are born speaking lies. Think about it...Does anyone ever have to teach a child to lie. Nope, it just comes naturally.

I know I'm pretty flawed and weak when it comes to some things. You do need to believe in yourself, especially in light of God believing in you, but if you don't see that you're not perfect and that you can't always do it on your own, you're missing some important facts about life.
I believe all things are possible through God. He's gotten me through a lot. If I hadn't had my faith when my wife and I lost our first child, I'd have ruined my life in some way. I couldn't have handled it on my own. God got me through. He gave me hope. Almost two years later, we've got a new baby boy and life couldn't be much happier.

What if you believe you are evil and decide you don't care and are going to go on being evil? Like a serial killer who realises what they are doing is wrong but just likes it.
Hardly a recipe for a just society.
