at the moment I have them soaking in a bucket of water but I'm unsure how to proceed

boil it for 30 mins. Then Dry it in the oven at 200C for 30 mins. let it cool before storing it in an air tight container until you need to use it.

Personally I wouldn't do it, myself. Because although you may clean it, it may still have microbes embedded beneath which could harm the bird. Don't be a meanie. Go and buy a bag. It's pretty cheep (no pun intended - LOL)!

I wouldn't risk it. They need to be totally disinfected and if you make a mistake - the birds die. Cuttle bone is cheap. Buy something safe.

don't use cuttlefish bone from the beach. it could have nasty germs that your birds could easily catch. buy one at the store it's much safer.
