Ask people you know for recommendations, that's how I found my current hairdresser...especially ask if you really like how their hair looks.

You can ask someone with nice hair (I know you're new there) where they get theirs done,
It isn't the salon that matters, it's the stylist. Find one you think you may like, then pay close attention to her/him when you sit in the chair. Ask how long they have been doing hair (or look at the issue date on their license, which should be displayed near the station) Are they paying attention, Do they listen to what you want, ask questions to be sure they understand what you mean, do they pay attention to you, or are they talking to stylist at the next chair? If you get an uncomfortable feeling, get up immediately! don't let them finish. Too many people feel they are at the stylist's mercy once they are under that cape. Don't be intimidated. You may have to try several before you find one who really understands what you want. Good Luck!

First: Stay away from salons that mainly just do GREAT CLIPS (o; ......they are trained mainly to do quanity over quality.

I would go to a high end salon.

Also, if you see a lady w/ a nice looking hair color, cut or style ask where she goes.

Last but not least: Call salons and ask if they guarentee their work? I know alot do not and those are ones you want to stay away from.

Good Luck,
Stylist of 9 yrs.

I used to have a girl that did my hair for 8 years, I got tired of being over booked and all that "salon gossip" I left and am still searching 2 years later, and going to a different person every time, I call my self a " salon slut" . You gotta try many different "shoes" on till you find a fit, and you like her or his style and personality.
I suggest going to a beauty school not only are you going to save alot of money, but also if you like somebody and continue to see that person till they graduate and follow them to their salon who knows what deals you are going to get! Its a very tired task but in the end it will work for you!

thanks for responding to my quistion on upstate newyork salons. i have lived here my whole life but the hairdressers in my town suck big time, so i am looking for somewhere else like max. 45 min. away to go. i have gotten a few people about there own hairdressers but its seems like there all bias cause i mean..we live in a small town and theres no one here that has really traveled abroad and really knows what a good haircut is. lol. so i figured i would ask online. good luck to you too! let just hope we both dont end up with something terrible :/ haha. kidding.

It's hard to find someone you like! When I moved I asked anyone with a great cut and color who did their hair. I'm not shy so it wasn't hard for me to do and I found that people love to hear you like their hair!

Walk up to someone who has hair you like and has hair similar you yours and ask them who they see. You don't have to know the person.. No one will be upset over you telling them you really like their hair :D

I think your best bet is to ask around in the area you just moved to.
