For sandwiches: I like to cut mine in rounds about 1/8" think.

For tacos, soups, etc.: I cut my onion in half, then lay the flat side down. Cut it in 1/2, then just slice about 1/4" at a time top to bottom, working your way around the half circle. This gives you longer, but narrow pieces. Adjust for the amount of onion you want to use.

Always cut starting at the end that has the green (not the root) because this keeps your onion together. The layers will slide if you cut from the root end.

For sandwiches choose a sweet onion (Walla Walla, Vidalia or Maui) or a red onion and slice whole rounds or break it into circles.
For tacos use a white or yellow onion and dice it by taking off the outer papery skin and slice in half then in planks toward the root end without going all the way to the root. Then down across those slices to form a dice cut.

I usually slice onions for sandwiches. ( My rings don't come out perfect) For taco's I will slice and cut the slices like a pizza (half then half then half) and I usually come up with small chunks. If I have to big of a piece, I just cut that down. Good luck and Happy eating!
