This baby won't be a baby forever and since everyone will probably buy picture books and Dr. Seuss you can always get a longer book for their parents to read to them chapter by chapter. Peter Pan or Alice in Wonderland, Swiss Family Robinson, The Jungle Book and Anne of Green Gables, are all classics still in print. But I think maybe The Velveteen Rabbit would be really good. Nothing better than a story about your stuffed animal who comes to life. Good Luck and happy hunting there are so many to choose from!

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
you can read the review on this site:
http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art34224.asp
Note: this site also has a link to amazon if you want to purchase online. The book is available everywhere, especially places like Barnes and Noble, Books-A-Million, Walden Books, etc. It's not too expensive at all and is a classic.
Just in case you're interested: My mom read this book to me til I memorized it, and would say every word with her. I then started to point at the words, one at a time, for each word that I said. I began to notice those words in other places and books and would read them. I then started sounding out other words that had the same letter sequences and taught myself to read. I knew had to read when I got to kindergarten. My mom loves to tell this to her friends. I, of course, think it's pretty cool. But anyways, I definitely suggest Goodnight Moon. It's a greatly loved book for a lot of kids that I've babysat and raised. (I have 8 brothers and 2 sisters).

I know this is not a traditional "classic" but it has been around for a long time. It's "The Monster at the end of this book" with Grover. I read this story to my sister, and I read it to my kids. My daughter came home from nursery school the other day and told me her friend has a monster in her closet. She then said, "we'll have to let her borrow the Grover story so she'll know there is no such thing as monsters." It is my all time favorite book.

You could try to find a book that has all the books of Mother Goose in it. Like a collection with classics in it.

My 4-year old and I were just enjoying The Velveteen Rabbit.
Goodnight Moon is very compelling and comforting to children.
Nursery rhymes never go out of style, and are available in many forms. When I was a child, I liked A Child's Garden of Verses.

If everyone is suppose to bring a book she'll probably get a lot of Dr. Seuss. I'd go with something new. I know we are nostalgic about our childhood's, but the baby isn't going to know the difference. I'd get one that has several different stories in it.

Fun with Dick and Jane. These books came out in the 30's and I saw them in print recently at Wal-Mart.
