Contact your Orange County community coordinator or equivalent. Most urban counties have a director of community projects that can help you find a project, or a group to work with on a project.
There is always something to do.

Raise funds for kids in foster care - especially around the holidays. It's such a commercialized time, and these kids really need support. Or sponsor a foster care kid education fund for when they're tossed out of the system at 18 with no resources. Or, set up for a homeless Thanksgiving feast - for that matter, a food kitchen any day of the week would be good.

Not really. I was just intrigued by the idea of an atheists group. Seems a bit like having a group for people who believe that the Earth is round. Surely we are the only people who DON'T need a group.

I wouldn't join an Atheist group, but perhaps a display of different things about what most Atheists believe in. Maybe raise awareness of pro-choice, gay marriage, and the separation of church and state.

I'm an atheist and for the life of me I can't see why an atheist needs a group. Are you trying to start the Anti Religion. All atheism is, is the non belief in gods.

You could always convene as followers of a supernatural being would to talk about how you don't believe in a supernatural being.
Sorry about the editorial I just always thought atheist groups were kind of funny.
But why not do something like go on a hike in the woods.

A blood drive would be good.
Why do atheists need to meet in a group? It sounds like you make a religion out of not believing.

Hm. A blood drive would be nice, although to make it worthwhile you might want to join up with another group, such as humanists or skeptics. Maybe there's a food bank or a soup kitchen that's short-handed and your group could "adopt" them. Lots of luck to you.

you could go door to door and offer support or someone to talk to for anyone who's doubting their religion.
I'm not being facetious...people in such a position might feel alienated from their church community and appreciate your perspective.
