I agree with the others. Its wonderful that you are taking such good care of your sick, elderly animal some people would just put them down. Please keep trying to encourage him to be comfortable and have fun but just be aware if the time comes when he just isn't enjoying life anymore or is in pain, that's when the best thing to do for the ANIMAL (maybe not you) would be to take him to the vet and be euthanized. It is painless and they just "go to sleep" very peacefully.
I also agree with the person who says to put him on special food. That can help extend his quality of life, the brands that person listed are good ones.
I sympathize with you as I have a wonderful Fox Terrier also. In my opinion they are the best breed of dog. I'm sorry I cant answer the question you have about the weight issue. The best person to answer that would be your vet.

Bless your heart!
All pet owners have faced what you are now dealing with.
And, there is no easy answer.

My only guide is to make all decisions for the welfare of the dog,
and not because I'm hurting. When he reaches the point where he is not "living", but just "getting by", l know it's time.

And, rest assured he is not fearing and aching over the prospect, like we do. Dogs seem to live "in the moment" better than humans. And, don't fear death.

It's not unusual, after we've made the decision to let them go,
that we wonder "Was it too soon" or "Did I wait so long he suffered?" We wonder this because we love them.

Don't be hard on yourself. You are a blessing to him, just a he's a blessing to you.

You will make the right decision,

Ask your vet about special food for him(you want to maintain a decent weight on him, if possible) Science diet makes food for dogs with liver disease, so call your vet and ask about it(I believe its called Science Diet L/D). no one can say how much time he has, but enjoy the time you have with him one day at a time. good luck

Michael, I am an animal lover too. Sometimes it takes tough love to put the dog to sleep. This dog is probably suffering and I would put the dog to sleep if your vet. says that he will suffer. Don't let your dog suffer...please.
