We don't always remember our dreams anyway, and are not usually aware of being in REM sleep. Some drugs block REM sleep, including alcohol and sleeping pills. Sleep apnea, stopping breathing during sleep can interfere with REM sleep. After a long time of REM deprivation we tend to hallucinate, be irritable, depressed.. go into REM at the wrong times. The DT's are related to this.

I suggest that you continue with the sleep experts that you have been seeing.

I'm not finding much on REM deprivation itself, but on sleep deprivation:

This article discusses the effects of REM sleep deprivation. It has been found to cause death (in rats) after long periods of REM sleep deprivation.

When you sleep, your body goes in cycles. There are four stages - stage 1 is light sleep (where you are starting to fall asleep but can still be easily woken up), stage 2, stage 3 and REM sleep. After you reach REM, you go back to stage 3, then stage 2, stage 1 and then start over again.

If you are continually having a problem falling into deep REM sleep, see your dr. He or she will be able to prescribe sleep meds. that will help you reach REM sleep. There may also be some underlying medical problems that are causing you not to reach REM sleep.

Don;t know how long. But I once rogered a maid for 6 days without sleep. Both of us. The butler unfortunately dozed off and had to be horse-whipped. Had to let him go after that, but I have another 28 left, so no sweat.

Find a doc who will listen and take your situation seriously. I'm also guessing that you do get some rems otherwise you'd be seriously deluded after all that time.

Not very long - been there done that. Hallucinations will occur - and you will make bad decisions...possibly life threatening. Go to sleep already!
