I have witnessed and been in so many near misses with motorists who just pullin or out of roads without using there indicators.
I say to these people "when I get the chance" It is ok i suppose you know where you are going but the lights are to let other road users know.
You would fail your driving test "no questions asked if you did not use indicators, so why does the LAW allow no use of them in everyday road use?

It is not to long ago that most people drove without wearing seatbelts, The LAW was able to change this easy enough.

Totally agree - the whole point of them is so other road users, and pedestrians, know what you are planning to do...if you're driving, people assume you are aware of how to use your own car and that you know how to put the indicators on, so they react accordingly...it's SOOOO dangerous to not use them, but it's so common for people to not bother. grrr....I'm not impressed!

Very good point, but this offence is very difficult to enforce. Clearly most cameras (which directed at a specific locations) couldn't capture incidents of failure to indicate. Where an officer is positioned on the roadside near such an event. They are subject to claims of parallax (officer not in position to accurately see, no witnesses likely). Also, these charges are subject ot a host of unassailable defences (such as that the driver claiming he/she made an 'emergency' lane change, which can't be disproved). Also (such as in City of London where cameras can be trained on the city roadways), there is a certain cost to enforcing any traffic charge; as low a risk as this offence usually carries, its likely to be met with a low fine, and not worth the paperwork.

Probably the best way to begin enforcement of this law is to enhance the fine of any accident which was caused by the failure to indicate--in this case, there is a complaining witness, costs of enforcement are wrapped up in the enforcement of the other charges, and a clear (if proven) set of damage deriving from the offence.

The police do enforce turn signal laws. They cannot do so consistently due to limited man-power as mentioned by another. This problem varies by region and town. I live in a very small town. Traffic laws are seldom followed. In fact, there is seldom significant traffic.
I suggest a different driving style for you. A good rule, especially where traffic laws are not followed or you have an older group of drivers who tend to forget, is to never trust turn signals. Just don't trust them or any other signals. Don't trust brake lights, back-up lights, or even headlights. Don't trust other drivers. Leave enough space for them to do something stupid. That is not too tough for me. For you, probably in a larger city, it will be tough. Don't trust people at stop signs or traffic lights either. They do run them. Drive with courtesy and no trust.

It is not law in UK to use indicators, and there is far more concerning driving flaws than forgetting or not bother to use indicators.

If the law should start fineing people for this, then while dont they just do it properly and fine every vehicle on the road for everything they dont do correctly...
Then youll find that the road system will be clear as most people will be banned.

I'm in the South and I couldn't agree more with you. So many just don't use them - and most of them are trying to cut in front of me (or into my side, haven't figured out which yet).

There was once a video on television of a policeman chasing a drunk woman - every little turn she made - she used her signals... she was letting the police officer know which way she was going...more could learn from her!

And for an officer to give the offender a ticket (and yes, it is a ticketable offense worth some points on your license) they have to catch ya!

i guess you are from India.. buddy the problem here is too much to tackle.. let one problem be tacked and then the second can be looked into.. and ya... one place where you will see people follow the use of indicators is the expressway.. wait and there will be some law being passed for that as well..let the roads be completed and the new number plates come in..

sometimes i feel the law enforcement community have a double standard reason for this. ex we as the general public will get pulled over for not using turn signals and fines issued. i often see the police officers do the same thing

you are legally obliged ti use your indicators (most people actually do when cop car is behind) and it is all down to priorities with police I'm afraid and have to be caught by police to be prosecuted (under dangerous driving act)

you are probably in a big city. Police only have time to respond to calls to 911 in big cities or traffic that is very bad. It's different in smaller towns.

People are stupid, and will never change. Drivers of German cars are worst. Audi stands for "Another useless driver inside".
