The best free protection (which can even beat paid software) includes a) a good firewall b) a good anti-virus and c) good anti-malware.

You can download these at the following sites:

a) www.zonealarm.com (Zone Alarm firewall)
b) www.free-av.com (Wonderful free anti-virus with updates daily)
c) www.lavasoft.com (Ad-Aware)

Keep your windows updated regularly using Windows Update (Open Internet Explorer, and click Tools, then Windows Update)

Update your anti-virus at least weekly, and carry out regular anti-malware scans with Ad-aware.

Good luck :)

I would personally reccomend Norton Antivirus Software by Symantec due to its simplicity and its functionality, however, you would also need some adware and spyware protection. This protection can be obtained from Spyware Doctor (www.downloads.com). Security updates can be obtained from the Microsoft Windows Updates Website if you have a Microsoft PC, Downloads for Mac PCs can be obtained from its website too. There is no one 'best' form of protection for your pc, there are many you just have to choose.

is your copy of windows xp legit or was it already on the system when you bought it. If it is legit then windows defender 2 can be downloaded from www.Microsoft.com it is ideal if you want to stop any unwanted software being installed onto your system without your knowledge.
