I guess that depends on how close you are to your friend. Also how bad you think he will take it. But dont take his hurt feelings over your happy ones. If you feel that this woman is right for you then go for it. Even if you have to explain it to your mate and let him know that he has no hold on her anymore.

From a female perspective I'd wait a couple of days maybe a week just to let things cool off because there might still be some lingering emotions left.
Also I'd be careful some times it's not always a good thing to go after the ex-girl of a friend he may consider that betrayal and if you value your friendship I'd ask him first if you should go for it!!!!

Before you do anything, do you think she is interested? Then, why did your friend and his ex break up? Is there any danger that he might think that you and she had anything going, or that it might have contributed to the break up? Then, do you think that this will affect your friendship? After all would he feel comfortable if you bring his ex along to the pub or other social situation? This kind of thing does often cost a friendship. You could ask him what he thinks of course. If you really love her it's worth it, if it could pass then it's probably too much hassle!

I think before you make a move you should be talking to your friend about his feelings on it first. Especially if they were serious. You could possibly be risking your friendship for a girl.
If he says its okay, then give it some time so that you are not a rebound relationship.

Speak to your mate first before doing anything.. some friendship lasts forever but girls do come and go. Do you want to risk your friendship? If he isnt really a good friend, then go for it.

You could be on sticky ground here, does your friend have any 'rules' about this because he could be sensitive about it. Also how do you know she's interested? There are plenty more fish in the sea, why don't you cast your net wider and see what you find?
