The UH-1 heliocopter made by Bell was a Utility Heliocopter (UH)
The GI's in Nam nicknamed it the Huey because it was easier to say than UH

The Army's 'Iroquois' helicopter was originally designated the HU-1 (Helicopter, Utility, Model 1). HU1 looked like HUI (pronounced 'Huey'). The designation later changed to UH-1. Since 'Huey' was sexier than 'Yoohi' (or some other possible reading of the designation), the original nickname stuck.

Oddly, when you look at the tailrotor pedals in some 'Huey' cockpits, they will read, "BELL [on the left] and HUEY [on the right]".

"Alright, here's the trade-you give us all your land, and we give you smallpox." "That's not a very good trade..." "No, trust us-we'll even commemorate this by carving a bunch of presidents into your sacred mountain!" "Somehow...this is getting worse..." "Well we had already named the weapons we intended to kill you with, but don't worry, we'll be sure to horribly mispronounce your tribal names and slap them onto yet unnamed weapons we WOULD have killed you with if we were doing this in the future!" "Are you insane?" "We'll name several of our cities and sports teams after you." "Is that supposed to honor us?" "No, it just helps relieve some of the guilt we actually don't feel." "You are seriously f###ed up..." "What time does your casino open?" "...9am..." "Well that's just swell."

Actually, the initial designation was HU-1A, which led to the nickname.
