HELP!!I just went outside to move my car and found 5 newborn kittens under it. The mother ran across the street. I think it is a feral cat because I have seen it around before and it always gets scared and runs off. I put the kittens in a large plastic trash can (on its side) with a towel inside and put a can of tuna in front of it to lure the momma cat to it. Its been about an hour and the momma cat hasn't come back yet. It is raining and cold around here and I am afraid they will get cold and hungry. Do you think the momma will come back? What do I do if she doesn't come back? The animal shelter isn't open around here on the weekends and I can't keep the cats.(hubby allergic)

.JUST LEAVE THEM ALONE SHE WILL CARRY THEM OFF . BUT CHECK UNDER THE HOOD BEFORE STARTING THE CAR. AS LONG AS THE MAMA CAT CAN FIND AND GET TO HER KITTENS SHE WILL UNLESS SHE IS A BAD MOTHER .WHICH IS VERY UNLIKELY . CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF TOUCHING THEM DOES NOT HURT UNLESS YOU KEEP DOING IT AND SCARE THE MAMA OFF PERMANENTLY

Probably best to leave it for a couple of hours and keep an eye out to see if the mother comes back.

Did you put the trash bin near the place she gave birth to them? If so, she should be able to find them easily. She probably just panicked when she saw you. If she doesn't come back they will need to be kep warm. I would try to call one of these shelters to see if they have an emergency line. They may be able to give you some advice. Failing that, if she doesn't come back soon they would need to be hand reared. You doing great , keep up the good work and keep us posted

You can't leave them to the racoons, or to wandering off into the street to get hit. Do you have garage? Could you put them inside a very large box, like a moving box, in your garage? Keep the box right side up, keep the top open, give them water, some newspaper on the bottom. On Monday, go to the Humane Society (make sure they don't destroy) and hand them over.

You can't leave them, you have to do this.

The mother cat will more than likely come back for them..if you put them outside in a box where she can get to them do that otherwise they will not survive.

Momma cat will come back -if she thinks it is safe. The only other option is lots of dry towels, blankets, and/or an electric blanket/heating pad - OUT OF THE WATER - of course, for safety's sake. Too sad, but such is the life of a feral cat.

The kittens should be ok as long as you didn't touch them with your bare hands! If you did, the mother may just abandon them. Keep a close eye on them.

Give us an update as to whether you touched them with your bare hands. There is one thing you can do.

Leave them where they are do not touch she will come and move them where she wants them They usually are in the process of getting somewhere when they start coming. Do not touch leave them in the spot and go in side. When she hears them crying she will come get them and put them in their new home.

The mother cat will move the kittens if she doesn't feel the area is safe.

Mama will probably come back. Make sure you stay away or only watch where she can't see you. If you don't see food is eaten or see mama, you may have to start feeding babies by bottle.
