The best way to talk to him is to without asking him of course, find out his music/ interests and what hobbies he has and start up a conversation on that. he will be happy that you have the same interests. Also find out his pet hates and go with that as well. If he hates sluts, be pristine. If he hates rap music , so do you. Always smile and laugh at what he says no matter what. Be confident in a subtle way like by telling him you like the shirt he is wearing. Do not act stupid and if some other is , just roll your eyes. He should appreciate this. Look at him like you care what he is talking about. Take an interest in other people and try to include other people in your conversation.

you could try notes but if you pass them in class there's a chance the teacher might see. but you could excuse yourself from class and put it in his locker. if you don't want to do that you could try and move closer to him or something like that.
