the greatest heavyweight champion is by far rocky Marciano his record was 49-0 making him the only heavyweight champion to retire with a perfect record. i mean who can beat that.

Muhammad Ali bar none. Marciano was an underweight heavyweight who couldn't have fought any other greats in their prime even from the Joe Louis era, just like Roy Jones. Holyfield would have to be another thought as well as Lewis. Klitscho was good, but he didn't fight enough. Another underated fighter is Larry Holmes, but Ali still tops the list. He beat Foreman in his prime! WHipped him into retirement. The same Foreman who scared the heavyweight division when he came back on the wrong side of forty.

Glad to see that no one has suggested Mike Tyson yet... ; )

Historically, the best heavyweight ever IMO at least--as well as most of the boxing experts I respect--is Ali or Joe Louis. I rank Ali #1, Louis #2 but I'll listen to an arguement with these rankings reversed.

Currently, the best heavyweight is probably Vitaly's brother Wladimir Klitschko. He's shown a questionable chin in the past, though in his recent fights he's looked sharp. He's a huge guy and has great boxing skills for his size. As long as he does whatever Emmanuel Steward tells him to he's the best. Of the rest, I'd probably give Maskaev the nod over Liahkovich and Valuev--Maskaev is IMO the most skilled boxer in that bunch.

Nat Fleischer who published "The Ring" magazine said Jack Johnson was the greatest in the Marquess of Queensberry era. A poll of experts found that Jim Jeffries was best and Jack Johnson was second best. Cassius Clay was rated tenth by these experrts. Only Clay himself and gullible people who believe such shameless boasting say Clay was "The Greatest". A tough Slugger nealy always beats a smooth Boxer. I hear that there was a computer bout between Clay and Marciano when both men were able to box. The result was much like the Marciano bout with Ezzard Charles, i.e. Marciano took a beating for most of the fight but survived to KO Charles and Clay.

The greatest modern era boxer is Ali. I hesitate to name anyone the greatest of all time in any sport because training techniques and equipment change, people are larger and other factors. For example, Rocky Marciano, who retired as the undefeated heavyweight champion, never weighed more than 189 lbs.

All though for years I hated to admit it. Muhammad Ali is by far the best heavyweight Champion ever. He had superior reflex's and the best chin in boxing. Joe Frasier hit him with punches that would have knocked out any other heavyweight fighter. George Forman( one of the hardest hitting heavyweights) beat on him tell his arms wore out with out ever doing any real damage. He took on everyone including the US Government and still came out on top. In his prime he beat all of the top fighters around with speed. As he aged he beat them with his chin and heart.
