is it more twangy, like a southern accent versus a mainstream american one?

it is not similar to the american accents you mentioned.
british and australian english is rarely drawled or stretched or twangy unless the speaker is well educated or privileged.
most of the common people speak rather quickly and often clip their words.

I think the Aussie accent is amazing... and aussie women... all they have to do is say g'day and I am a puddle on the floor.... and frankly anything said with an English London accent... no matter how stupid it is still sounds... well just more intelligent.

I think the Aussie accent is actually a cross between the London English accent and Southern US... perhaps Texan... like a Brit with a drawl....

If by English accent you mean an educated or upper class English accent look for very round vowels and crisp pronunciation of consonants.

I would say aussies sound more like a variation of british accent. I used to get confused betwwen british and aussie when i was learning English. I'm Southamerican.
