I really want to try baking bread & rolls, but the yeast and warm water part scares me. I have an instant read (meat) thermometer- do I use that? or do I need a candy thermometer? Any good beginner recipes?

I have faced the same dilemna before. I know that u r not supposed to use the meat thermometer. I usually just wing it. Just turn the tap water on to the highest it will go and that should be fine-- it has always worked for me. :) Happy baking!!

You can buy a candy thermometer, which will come in handy for other things too. They probably have them anywhere they sell cooking equipment, probably even your supermarket. Most of them go from 100F to 450F or higher. The other way to test the temperature of the liquid for this is to put a drop on the inside of your wrist. If it feels warm when it lands, it's too warm for yeast. Ideal temperature is when you don't feel any warmth or coolness from the drop of water at the instant it lands, but slightly cool is okay too. The main danger for yeast is water that's too hot, which kills the yeast. If the water is slightly cool, all that happens is that the yeast takes a little longer to do its thing.

I don't use a thermometer at all. I just use water that is warm to the touch, not cool, and not hot. 110 is not that hot. If you think of body temperature, we are about 98.6 degrees, so 110 is just a little warmer. Just stick your finger in it and wiggle it around. If it makes you think, "Mmmm, that's nice and warm," it is ok.

no meat or candy thermometer. you need to get a bi metal or better yet a timer with a digital thermometer, that's what I use. Its good for baking and for roasting meats. do get too scared with yeast, if need be run the water until it feels slightly warm.

A candy thermometer. 110 degrees is a little above body temperature. It is a little warmer than lukewarm.

ALWAYS USE A CANDY THERMOMETER! never use the meat thermometer. baking bread is really easy but be sure to use a candy theremometer. you can also find recipies on foodnetwork.com. never use google because some of the sites lie. good luck!! =]
