My dogs are allowed on the furniture in the family room but not the living room. As a result, they only go on the furniture in the living room when I am not looking. Actually only one of them does this, but when I ask him what he is doing, he just looks the other way.
I started putting things on the couch and loveseat to keep him off, but he just pushes them aside and gets on.
I have pretty much conceded and put blankets down, I still tell him to get off, but hey, dogs are people too.
BTW, the dog beds are more comfortable then my own bed, having fallen asleep on them several times.

lol sadly dogs will do that! It really does depend how old they are because if they are just a puppy just grab them GENTLY and say no and get them off the couch if they keep jumping on the couch tap them on the nose and say no sternly! If they are older dogs they should no better so just tap them on the nose! It usully works but you have to be patient because dogs take a very long time to train to do something!

Dogs think they are people. So, they want to do what they see you doing. If you tell them not to do something, they won't do it because you are the leader of their social group. As soon as you step outside of view, they will forget and do it anyway. Often, he will jump off the couch when he hears you coming. Since animals can't internalize WHY not to do certain things, it is pretty much out of sight, out of mind with them.

Ya.
It's a power struggle. You're probably not being the dog's leader, instead you're just showing it affection (that's what I always did). I read in a book that you're supposed to show them that you're like super important and that you're the leader of the pack. There are books on-line about training if it's actually a big deal to you.

yes! my dog is sooo spoiled! When we got her my parents said she wasn't allowed upstairs or on the furniture. Now, five years later, she sleeps upstairs with me and always gets on the couch with me when i sit down. I also find the couch to be warm when i get home from school! my parents always get mad at me but i love my dog and she can do what she wants to! haha.

I have 2 dogs, and they do it constantly. I don't blame them, who wants to sleep on the floor? My dogs even have nice comfortable dog beds that look quite comfortable to me, but they still insist they are human or something.

My dog has run of the entire apartment just like me-I would love to know what Bob does all day when I am not home.

Yes. Scrappy sneaks and do it and he knows he is not suppose to be there because when he hears me coming he jumps down softly.
He also sits on my patio chairs....
