It seems to me that the draft, or auto-enlistment would serve to deter wars? What are your thoughts?

I think it would make people more involved in figuring out ways to get around being drafted...more money for lawyers.

No.

Enforced servitude is another word for slavery. Regardless of whether they are paid or not, it is unconstitutional and immoral. If a government that is democratically elected and representing the interests of its population can not muster enough citizens to serve its military, then a long hard look must be turned towards said government.

There is no shortage of patriots, and warriors, protectors and violent thinking individuals that normally make up a given army in America.

On a practical level, draftees are notoriously ineffective fighters. They are not motivated to succeed, and they are not generally courageous (rightly so, they are not fighting for something they believe in). part of the problem in the Vietnam War was just this. Poor under educated men were disproportionately represented, whereas the sons of the affluent and connected were not sent to their deaths. This war did as much damage to American political and social moral as did the Civil War a century earlier.

World War 2 population mobilizations will never be seen again as a modern war with that kind of desperation would be fought and ended far too quickly for a universal draft to take place.

The army does not want draftees.

Citizens are politically involved when they have a stake in the outcome of a given election. If the choices between two political parties is small (like now) and the standard of living is high (compared to the rest of the world it is very high), then political disinterest is not necessarily a bad thing.

low voter turnout is a sign that people are content. high voter turnout means they are discontent or forcibly made to vote.

We don't need a voter draft any more than we need a military one.

a million - (Edited to rewrite) those who've a situation with authority likely exist in larger proportions interior the reformatory inhabitants. you do not desire human beings rebelling hostile to orders once you're at a conflict it truly is severe sufficient to have Congress prepared to enact a draft. 2 - merely because someone's' in reformatory would not advise that their lives are the disposal of the federal authorities. are you able to imagine the abuses which could carry about? 3 - understanding that they're going to both be killed/injured in conflict or go back to reformatory, maximum ought to disappear, returning to society. between the crimes which could look and the quantity which could be on the run (even if or not they are no longer breaking any more advantageous guidelines), regulation enforcement must be beaten...it really is as well to the anti-conflict protests which could spring up. 4 - Having a draft--even of those who transgressed hostile to guidelines--ends up in issues besides. the benefits of an all-volunteer military were propounded back and back over the former few a lengthy time period. the topic matters with conscription do not disappear merely because the draftees dedicated crimes. 5 - some guidelines are unjust via the indisputable fact that's. If someone is arrested for combating hostile to a perceived injustice, then the conflict quantities to a fashion of executing political prisoners. the authorities can take a "do what we inform you, or we will positioned you at the front lines" attitude. 6 - If someone is later stumbled on to were wrongly accused the criminal ramifications of sending that human being into conflict must be huge; if he died, it must be groundbreaking. no one interior the authorities ought to opt to be excited by a case like that. do not get me incorrect--there's a use of having a protection rigidity application with regards to prisons, such as providing pastime education for a available occupation interior the protection rigidity after rehabilitation (presented the guy did not carry out a criminal offense that bars him/her from provider). even with the indisputable fact that, to easily deal with inmates as cannon fodder for use on the exhilaration of the federal authorities is fraught with issues. It does no longer end properly for all and various.

No, This is not China. Having a millitary of volenteers has given us the edge scince the revolution. Why change that. This is America people are free to think for themselfs. And I dont see any way that auto inlistment could deter wars. That is the job of our politicians and elected leaders, foremost the job of those who enlist to VOTE.

Some countries insist that all young people serve for a certain amount of time, but not necessarily in the armed forces. There are also police forces, rangers, government positions, etc. where these young people can choose to serve.

I have an Austrian friend who did his service in a branch other than active military, for example.

Any of these occupations will make the participant more aware of the government they serve, and the issues which affect their nation. Also, it puts the young person in a better position to get a job after their service is over, because they will understand work ethics and have work experience.

We already have the draft it's called the National Guard. Guard enlistments are way, way down, it's no longer money for college and one weekend a month State Side. Now it's a year in Afghanistan and a year in Iraq. Bush just drafted 35,000 who had retired.

If the draft was re-instituted it would bring a re-enactment of the Vietnam War protest. Part of the reason that Iraq has gone so far is that unless you "volunteer" you know you won't be going. That is why the Bush administration will NEVER bring back the draft...then they would have to face the wrath of the educated and angry.

I am for an automatic conscription pertaining to virtually all government agencies. The military and police forces would benefit the most from the influx of casual labor.

We would have an awesome military to protect us and EVERYONE would be "on duty" at some point. We'd see things in a new way. But would it deter wars, or only make things worse????????
