Well, it all depends on how old you are, what kind of pet you're looking for, and do you have a suitable home to have a pet. If you're old enough and looking for a dog, go do some dog sitting or walking for a neighbor or friend who has a dog and see how you like the experience. A caged pet is simpler, impress your parents by printing off some care sheets of some small animals you'd be interested in, and read up on them as much as possible.

Show that you're responsible. Your parents don't want to end up taking care of the cat in a couple of years. First get a simple pet (if they'll let you) like a fish or a mouse, and demonstrate that you can take care of that. they live short lives, so you won't be stuck with them forever.

Then, ask for a cat. They're low maintenaince, loving, and friendly. A potty trained cat only needs her food and water refilled and her litterbox scooped every few days. Cats are cute friendly and sweet, and good luck!

I would explain to them that if you were to have a pet that you would be learning what responsibility is and having a pet is a really good way to learn. Promise and keep your promise that you will do every thing that needs to be done for your pet.
As a parent I think that what they would be worried about is that you loose interest and they have to care for the pet.

You need to show that you are responsible. Owning a cat takes responsibility. They need food and water twice a day; they need groomed regularly and their litter box needs changed or scooped at least every other day. You could bring up the point that a cat is much less work than a dog since cats can be left along all day. Good Luck

Tell them how much responsibility it will teach you. But you better be responsible for it then, or you will regret it later :(
