what musical artist best represents your definition and why?

Being a hippie is not a matter of how you dress, how you behave, how much or how little money you make or even where you stand in social status quo/ It is a philosophical approach to life3 that emphasizes freedom, peace, love, and a respect for others and the Earth.
Being a hippie is a lifestyle choice that was made before the sixties and is still being made today. Hippies are more than a part of a counter sub-culture movement, they are a re-current sub-culture.
This definition best describes what a hippie is and is from the website http://www.60sfurther.com. This is a great site for old and new hippies alike....one of my faves anyway.
Thanks for participating in my question.
The musical group that speaks loudest for the hippies and what they really stood for , in my opinion, were The Beatles; esp. John Lennon. Although there were many others that spoke out for a generation, as well, this space is not near large enough to discuss all of them.

Drugs were ahuge part of what most people see as a hippie, but you don't have to do drugs to be a hippie....I don't and I'm a hippie.

well where I come from people would say someone who eats granola bars, doesn't shower much, wear make-up or use deoderant. I would say a free spirited person, someone who cares about the environment and other people besides themselves, and conserves energy among other things...

Old school. Integrity, honesty, generous spirited, kindhearted, anti-establishment, and stoned. I guess the first band that came to mind was The Doors. When I think of a hippie though, I don't automatically associate music as a part of the definition. I would say weed occurs to me initially. I guess music was a huge part of the whole hippie culture, but I think it is more of a state of mind than it is musical. Although, music does indeed bring certain people with a common interest together. I would say it had something to do with the drugs as well.

Just a person that lives with the motto "whatever happens...happens"...

They don't have to be long haired, tie died wearing, non bathing, greasy people to be a hippie ...(I know that's what most people think a hippie is)

In my opinion, the best musical artist that defines hippie is...The Grateful Dead.

My definition of a hippie is someone who is a real free spirit, hates the establishment, and has the attitude that I will do what I want and if someone doesn't like it so what. Janis Joplin is a priime example.

Long hair, rock n roll, drugs, booze, sex, 60's, 70's and 80's might not be a conventional definition of a hippie, but it's what comes to my mind, I was there!

Joan Baez. Because she didn't sell out to the establishment. Also Bruce Cockburn for the same reason
