I did a bit of research on this question because my first reaction was quite strong. Uggg...But, no, this is not illegal. It's unfortunate because it sounds like the mother needs to let go of her daughter and let her grow up.

Many people are surprised to learn that experts consider 4 or 5 years to be the average age of weaning worldwide.5 Research by Dr. Katherine Dettwyler, anthropologist at Texas A&M University, argues that the natural weaning age for human beings falls between 2.5 and 6 years of age.6 An informal survey conducted by Dr. Dettwyler indicated that many more women in the United States are nursing children past infancy, and she has reports of children as old as ten years old still breastfeeding.

i agree with just about everybody that said yes 10 is way too old--i was shocked once by a woman who said she still breast fed a 5 year old, but this? yikes! Dont know if it is illegal, that may depend on the locale-- i think the mom has some fetish to have her breasts produce milk, and as long as she is nursing she will keep producing milk...when does it end, when the child reaches adulthood? so very scary.

I don't think it is illegal. Given that I think that the mother is hanging on to tight. The daughter is the one that will end up suffering in the long run. I think tell anyone except for police officials (if asked) would be very damaging to the 10 year-old. If you feel the authorities need to be contacted for the child's safety. I would say follow your intuition. Under no other circumstances would I reveal what you know to anyone else. It could mentally damage that girl beyond what she already is.

The daughter is a little old to be doing that!! I don't however think it is illegal. You would have to call CPS to find out for sure. I'm not sure what the laws say about that sort of thing. It makes you wonder if that is all that is going on in that house.

That's way abnormal, but i dont know if it's illegal. Something like this sounds like the mother has the problem, not the child. She seems to be clinging onto her daughter and making sure her daughter still needs her by breastfeeding her. Usually, a mother should ween her child off of breastfeeding by at the latest 3.

I don't know if it's illegal, but it's totally disgusting, as you said. But how can you get breast fed 10 years after your child is born? Wouldn't you run out of milk? Also, she is fat because the milk she drinks is SUPPOSED to make her fat, because babies need that milk so they can get baby fat, to help them grow.

You need to inform your neighbor that what they are doing is totally gross. Also, tell that girl to stop too. Being overweight, of course, is bad, but this kind of situation can scar her for life, give her diabetes, heart disease..

It probably isn't illegal but morally, it is horribly wrong! Something may be going on in that family. Perhaps the proper authorities should be given an anonymous call. This is not normal for a ten year old to be breastfed.

i don't think it is illegal but it is creepy. maybe u should tell ur neighbor to stop breast feeding their kid. i heard u are supposed 2 stop doing that after the age of one. the weight gain thing is normal to a certain degree. the girl may be gaining weight because she is going thru puberty. i gained weight when i went thru puberty but then again i wasn't being breast feed. haha. the weight gain is normal but the breast feeding isn't...but then again i'm not a doctor. lol.
