and streets, avenues of NYC? I have walked around but I still get lost with the whole east, west, etc. business.

The subway is pretty easy once you kind of get the hang of it. There are little portable subway maps alllll over the place. Just buy one and carry it around. It also makes the east/west/etc nonsense easier because it gives you a real, tangible picture of the city. I'm not from there, but I think I seriously have a better understanding of direction there than I do where I actually live because I think of everything in terms of that little subway map.

Numbered streets go east & west. Numbered & named Avenues go north & south - with some exceptions.

Get a map and route pamplet. The best way is to just ride it.

Work the maps.. they are everywhere in the system. On the Platforms, the trains. the stations.
