Some do. This was the major debate between the Sadducee's and the Pharisees. Pharisees believed in a afterlife while Sadducee's did not. This is the argument for his defense that Paul used when he was being judged once--that he was for a life in Heaven which was an ongoing debate in the Jewish Faith so why was it all of a sudden a crime to debate this just because he said that Jesus was an integral part of this afterlife.

Definitely. I am not only Jewish, but I am a funeral director, and can tell you that with the utmost authority. In Judaism, people are buried as soon after death as is reasonably practicable, this allows the soul to go before G-d for judgment. It is our belief that no person who lives is so righteous that they have not sinned, even if unintentional. So, they have to go to a place to repent before they are allowed to go to heaven.
