It's not automatic after a certain number of years. There are a lot of hoops to jump through, and the amount of time it takes depends in part on how quickly you can get the required information.

Hello:

If you obtained your green card through marriage to a USA citizen, then it takes 3 years. After 3 years and if you are still married, you will be able to file for US citizenship.

If your green card was not obtained through a marriage to a US citizen, then it is 5 years.

Many people are able to keep their original citizenship of their country allows dual citizenship.

Most Permanent Residents have to wait 5 years after becoming PRs to qualify for US Citizenship. However, the law gives a break to spouses of US Citizens: If you have been married for at least 3 years, and your spouse has been a US Citizen for at least 3 years, you are eligible for citizenship 3 years after you become a Permanent Resident. Actually, you are allowed to apply for naturalization 3 months before the end of your 3 year residence.

well my father in law has been jumping threw hoops to get his wife her cititzenship for 7 year's now! she's here in the usa from china but since 9/11 it's taking extra long to issue us citizenship. : / gl and hang in their!!

you can get in faster if you join the military, unfortunatly you are probubly too old or too chicken sh1t to join up.
