Looking for a healthier approach in my cooking for my family. Would like t oreplace butter in my cooking. Which brand and kind of olive oil would be best. I'm looking for something inexpensive and that either adds a pleasant taste or doesnt alter the flavor of the food cooked, mostly meat and veggies.

Any olive oil can be used for cooking. The best and cheapest in my opinion are the Spanish brands, they also have the best olives (don't tell the Italians). If you want to use it on food without cooking eg in a salad dressing then extra virgin oil is better because it is the first pressing and therefore lighter tasting, or over cooked fish or pasta or in sauces then use the stronger flavoured non-virgin oils which are also usually less expensive. I suppose you could also use it as a base for massage oil but it's a bit strong. And you're right about the effect on cholesterol; canola is also good.

Bertoli is perfectly good for cooking with and not too expensive and its available in most countries.

You really don't need to use an expensive olive oil to cook with - extra virgin or what ever cause it changes taste when you cook it anyway so a reasonable brand is fine - ignore what the food snobs will say.

Good quality olive oil does make a difference if it is added to salad dressing or drizzled on things after cooking.

I don't think the brand matters too much. If you are looking for a light tasting olive oil make sure you look for Extra Virgin and light tasting - Extra Virgin doesn't guarantee it doesn't have an olive-y taste.

I only cook with Olive oil or Canola oil. Both are heart healthy. Canola has less of a taste though.

sorry this does not really answer your question, but I do have a tip.

Olive oil (extra virgin) of course is better than butter, BUT it is only its healthiest when it is not cooked. So you might as well cook with a little vegetable or corn oil since it is cheaper. Just use sparingly. When the meal is already cooked - drizzle on the crude olive oil. very Very good for you.

Great for salads but not for cooking. Olive oil burns at a lower temp' than other oils and raises the level of oxidants. For healthier cooking use cannolla oil
