I have had great results with Atkins, but like any other diet you must follow it through. I went on Atkins at 293 lbs and began losing weight quickly. At about 255, I became pregnant and of course added back the carbs. I gained to 287 with preg, but was back at 250 at my 6 week post natal check-up. Unfortunately, I ate anything I wanted using nursing as an excuse I was soon back to 283. My son is now 2 and I restarted Atkins 2 months ago. I have lost 15 lbs.

My suggestions:

Read the book. It is very motivating and will help you understand what you can eat. Too many people eat too much fat with Atkins. I reccomend eating more salads if possible. Try not to overdo red meat. You should try to balance with lower fat chicken and fish. Also, just because Mayo and Ranch dressings are low in carbs does not mean you can eat a soup bowl full at each meal (my dear husband's problem).

Get the KetoSticks to test your urine for ketosis- a sign you are burning fat. It will help you understand what foods will slow your fat loss. Explained in the book.

Use specially designed low carb products carefully. Sugar free candies are a God send, but for me they can make the scale stop for a week or two.

Stay on Induction for a month. It really helps get your fat burning and changes your tastes more effectively than 2 weeks.

Drink lots of water to flush toxins. Atkins deterents say Atkins can hurt your kidneys- drinking more water helps flush your kidneys.

Follow the Atkins phases. You should not eliminate fruit and grains from your diet forever. You just need to get back to a sensible weight, then begin to re-introduce different versions of fruits and grains than most Americans are accustomed. Your Maintainence Diet (I have not been there yet, so I don't know what mine will look like) should include a variety of whole grains and lower carb fruit varieties like berries.

Remember to treat yourself occasionaly to a free meal- my choice is once a month Chinese. But remember you must pay for it with an extra tough workout the next day. That is the best way to get back on track. You will also find that once you hit the groove, "cheating" with sweets or carbs leaves you feeling sick. Then its just not worth it.

Sorry to be so long, but I am a real Atkins Cheerleader. Best of luck

Perhaps you should read up on how Mr. Atkins died and you may think twice about embarking upon that journey...

"The. . .report from the New York City medical examiner--which was inadvertently provided to a Nebraska doctor who is vehemently anti-Atkins--shows that the 72-year-old physician had suffered from a heart attack, congestive heart failure, and hypertension. According to his death certificate, the "immediate cause" of Atkins's death last April was "blunt impact injury of head with epidural hematoma." He was critically injured when he struck his head in a fall on an icy Manhattan street. The references to Atkins's medical history are contained in handwritten notations on one page of the ME's document--"MI" for myocardial infarction, "CHF" for congestive heart failure, and "HTN" for hypertension. The document, first reported on by The Wall Street Journal, also lists Atkins weight as 258 pounds."

Atkins died because of that miserable excuse for a diet. Overload your body with protein, fat, and meat and look what you have to look forward to.

Try eating a vegan and mostly raw diet and be amazed at what a little healthy eating will do for you and your longevity!
If you really want a plan to follow, check out South Beach, it's a little more based on actualy nutrition than Atkins - and it won't kill you.

Cheers! Best of luck to you.
(Juice fasting and MasterCleanse is also a great way to lose weight, though you will gain the weight back without changing your diet and exercising. Vegan is the way to go!)

I'm sure many people have, however, it depends from person to person whether it will work for you. Just like headache medicines, sleep medicines, so on and so forth.

BTW, vegan is not the way to go, you need more than just fruits and vegetables. You need SOME fat and protein too. Just not McDonalds servings of fat and protein (grease on a bun). Basically meaning, eat a small steak at every meal, and a serving of a vegetable of your choice, and excersize (however you spell it) once in a while during the day, and you will lose more weight than if you were on the Atkins diet.

My mum lost 6 stone with atkins, and has maintained for almost a year. She lost the weight over 3 years, so it wasn't a crash diet, and I think this has helped her weight loss. She had tried many diets, but Atkins was the first one that 'worked'.
I gave it a go, but had to stop after a month as it gave me very bad stomach pains.

I'm a certified personal fitness trainer, and you just got me started on one of my worst pet peeves: the Atkins Diet. I for one am 100% against it. Unless you're a total sedentary person and don't want to bother with good nutrition and exercise. The reasons this fad diet sucks: The diet asks you to cut out all cardohydrates. But see? Carbos break down and form glycogen, which is the main fuel for our muscles. You won't find ONE SINGLE athlete who does that diet, I can guarantee you! Because athletes need fuel.
People DO lose weight on this diet, but it's usually only water weight because carbos soak up 2 times their weight in fluids, so if you cut them out you'll lose some water weight. But people usually gain this weight back within a few months. What poeple don't realize is: you can cut out ANY major food group, i.e. Carbos, fats, or protiens and lose weight! But the only healthy way to lose weight is simple: eat less and exercise more? You have to burn more calories than you take in. Just like trying to empty your tank in your car.

Mustard is a secret bulge-buster. The idea boosts your metabolism and boosts natural ephadrine, the hormone which burns fat. According to Jeya Holly, professor of human nutrition on Oxford Brookes University, just a tablespoon within your food can reduce a flabby waist by 20 per cent!

I lost 9lb in 3 weeks. It's difficult to maintain, as you crave fruit and veg more than ever. The same sorts of food become very sickening, so after the 3 weeks, I've not attempted to try it again. I does work ,it's just not very healthy. Weight Watchers is better, all food in moderation. It just takes a bit more thought.

Some might say yes...because following this diet will lead to weight loss, but at a great physical cost.
It is simply not a healthy way to live.
If you need to lose weight, follow a balanced diet, and exercise more often.
It is that simple...I didn't say it was simple to actually do, but the solution is simple.

It will work until you go off of it, and then you will probably gain what you lost, plus some. I eat a diet of 40%protein, 40%carb, 20% fat and this works very well. It keeps your body balanced and feeling full so you don't overeat.
