I reckon most of you guys out there will be too young for this question. I know when you're 70yrs old you have to renew your drivers licence, does it also require you to take another test?

I keep my eyes checked one a year, they appeare to be ok.

just a competency / medical test that you have to sit (in britain) the dvla will write to you as you are nearing this age with all details you need and questionaire to fill in (basics about medical have you had stroke heart disease diabetes develop?) you should only have your licence taken away if your doc thinks you are unfit ! I think you go thruough same rigmarole every 5yrs then yearly after 80

Happy motoring

In California, I know they will keep renewing your license as long as it didn't get suspended at any time. That's when you have to take a test. I would assume the same applies in most other states.

The age doesn't necessarily mean anything and it's not their place to judge or discriminate against a 70 year old in the way that they would a 60 or 50 year old.

When you go to the DMV, they thing they ask you to do is look up at the reader board and read off a randomly selected line to make sure that your eyesight is okay.

There is the risk of Discrimation because of Agism. If you "look aged" where you're really hunched over, sound absentminded, and give off all these warning signs, then probably they'll scrutinize you and suggest you take the Driver's Test to see if your mentally fit.

However, if there's nothing wrong with you, treat it like a Job Interview. You march up to the desk when they call your number, answer questions with confidence, read the letters on the screen with confidence, and that's it.

It's the same thing if you've got a Police Cruiser driving behind you and you're worried because you left your Driver's License at home and fret about them pulling you over. If you make any hasty driving maneuvers, look nervous, and give them reason to pull you over, they will.

If you just drive normally and abide by the traffic laws, the Police Cruiser will just pass you by and won't question you. It's only when you draw attention to yourself that you get caught.

Even if they said, "Did you know you're 70 years old. Did you know you're supposed to take a test?" You say "No, I didn't know." Look them straight in the eye and play dumb.

It's the same thing when you get pulled over by a Police Officer and they ask, "Do you know why I pulled you over?"

Never admit anything. You make them be the one to point it out. If you played your role to the hilt where you sound confident, mentally fit, and sure of yourself, they may even just waive having you take a test (if there really is one for 70 year olds) because you sound stable.

If they say, "Well, you should really be taking a test." You say, "Well, I didn't know. However, I just went to the optometrist the other day, my eyes are fine, and I was given an updated prescription."

As long as you are open and friendly, they'll just wave you on through. They have a whole line of people at the DMV that they have to process. They don't want to have to sit and think too hard on whether to make out a new processing form for you. It's the one time you can use other people's Apathy to your advantage.

They'll most likely ask you to prove that your eyesight or corrected vision is up to par and say, "Okay, could you please read Line __, Column __.

I know because I went to the DMV in April and I hadn't had my Prescription updated so my Right Eye was bad. However, I just read the line quickly and when I messed up on the line, I said, "Oh, sorry. I looked again and read it confidently." They said okay and approved it.

I work in the Film & Entertainment Industry and one of the funny tips I learned is that when you're on the Studio Lot where you're not supposed to be, walk with a purpose and act like you're supposed to be there. If you do, you won't get challenged by Security Guards.

If you're looking like you're lost, your answers are kind wishy washy, or you give off signals like you're being shady, you'll give off all kinds of signs.

Dont be concerned about the DMV.

You're 70 years old. You've paid your Taxes.. Remember that the person at the desk of the DMB was in DIAPERS when you were out working your butt off and earning your keep as a Citizen of the United States of America.

Don't allow yourself to be intimidated by the System you worked for. You'd think that after paying 50 years worth of Taxes that you would at least get some level of RESPECT.

Remember that if some young upstart or whipper snapper tries to throw around Authority with you telling you whether you can be allowed to drive or not or if you have to jump through hoops to get your license.

Don't let anyone push you around. You have rights and you've earned your keep. You would think that after all that after dedicating the best years of your life to maintaining and supporting the State and Government, that it would at least entitle you to some leniency or Seniority when it comes to getting something a Driver's License.

Don't forget that there are so many young irresponsible drivers out there on the road that slip by with a Driver's License. You have so many hotheaded drivers that contribute to Road Rage making the roads even more dangerous.

They should be thanking you for choosing to drive on the road and make it a safer place and setting an example on how people should be on the road.

Why should responsible adults such as yourself have to worry about jumping through hoops and fret about whether you get your License or not?

All you need to do is be able to pass the eye exam at the DMV. And that's with your glasses if you need them.
