I'm going to have live music for my ceremony, but would like to cut costs at the reception, if possible. Is there any way to set up your own equipment and just play a nice CD? Or do you need professional equipment? I DO NOT want tacky.

Yes, you can purchase CD's that have the capability to record serveral hours of music. You can organize the music to your program. You can rent equiptment that holds several CD's and just have a person incharge of the music. We had a DJ at our class reunion and he was there with a laptop only and sound system. On the RSVP each person had to write down 5 song request.
You can also do this for your wedding. You would be suprised what other come up with that you couldnt think of. Its made the reunion one to remember, some came up with popular songs from when we were in primary, elementrary and high school. I tell you the memories it brought. But back to the wedding. If you ask everyone to email or send you song suggestions then everyone would have a part in your wedding.
Make sure you tell them that this is the music that they would like to hear at the wedding. Tell them to go back in the day. Involve everyone. I am doing this for my wedding. Its cheeper and you can have one of your ushers or someone else take care of the music part of the program.

Make sure that you make a cd for each part of the program. The CD that allows for extended hours plays is not part of the program.

You could make some Cd's of the songs the two of you like the best then just play them on a CD player. I would make sure that I had decent enough speakers though if you are going to be in a very large place. You wouldn't want the music to come out all distorted. If you were worried I'm sure that you could rent a nice stereo system for the day to play them on also.

I went online and searched for party music and wedding music, I found a lot of sites that sell different party cd's so I started down loading the songs that were on the cd's and there were some different sites that have lists of party music. If you can't download music try to find the program ares to download from. It took a few hours to make five or six cd's and I mixed up slow and fast songs. We used them for a couple 50th party and a wedding one we used a disk changer and the other time we had a karoke machine. Hook up a couple speakers and your set. It was like $7.00 for the disks and the time to do it compared to what you will pay for a dj or a band. you will save so much money that you could spend on decorations, food ,or what ever the heck ya need. Good luck !!

You will need to rent or borrow a PA system of some kind, but yes, many people these days hook up an Ipod or laptop and "self-DJ" that way, or have a friend or cousin volutneer to be an amateur DJ, with CDs that you provide.

My fiance is in a band so we're going to borrow some of the other guys' equipment and do the same thing.

decide with your partner what would be best suited for your wedding perhaps look into renting (they might set-up for a nominal fee) or enlisting the help of qualified friends for some sound equipment or mc duities also what about making a selection of mixed cd's playing them as you chose or if you can purchase an MP3 with decent memory and hook it up to play through the speakers. Best of luck

At my reception we had them play a cd of our favorite Irish music (Irsih Wedding) and It was very nice, you didn't have to look at all the band equipment all night, and there was more room for the dancing. No one even seemed to notice that the band was "missing."

screw the dj and the band. they always suck (dj's) and people are always disapointed. they are late, they play bad old music and you dont know them so it isnt fun. the best thing, get a few speakers and an ipod. my friend did that at her may wedding and it was great, she made a few playlists (grooms fav songs, brides fav songs, best dance songs, best slow songs, etc) that way you get to be yourself at your wedding and feel comfortable because your playing your kind of music. also the ipod lets you change whenever...and you're in control not some weird DJ!!!
