Cross trainers work well. I have a pair of Gore-Tex trail shoes that grip well and stay mostly dry. I always upgrade my pedals as well. If it has a big surface area and really grippy bear trap surface it works well without clips as long as you "ankle" properly. I may reinstall the clip-less someday, but usually casual riding doesn't call for being clipped in.

Get some nice Vans or etnies. I have a BMX bike and whenever I ride it, I wear my DC shoes. I recommend the skateboarding/biking brand shoes like I wear because they give you a better grip than basketball or tennis shoes because the sole of the shoes is a thicker material. This should help if you're riding long distance.
Hope this helps! Ride safely~

im not to sure about regular shoes. i do XC off road racing and i have the clipless style. they are very effective. if you use regular shoes to do alot of biking then you're knees will end up wasted in a cuple years. clipless shoes offer the ability to pedal on an upward stroke instead of contsantly pushing downward, so they give you better "spin". theyr not quite cheap for a set of shoes, pedals and cleats. mine cost close 2 $100 (661 expert MTN, wellgo SPDs). but they are worth it if you like to ride alot. good luck with it!

Cross training shoes have better ankle support - so you should go with that. Running shoes are expensive and won't give you the advantage that cross-training shoes will.

I would say cross training shoes because of their versatility. I'd suggest any Nike cross training sneaker or any New Balance sneakers. Damn yo, 8 miles is crazy but mad good stuff.

If you have flat pedals, with no clips, I would get a pair of stiff soled bike shoes. They will help alot.
