Hi Eric
I am a Hindu.
Truth,Non Violence,Peace,Righteousness and Love are the 5 pillars of Hinduism. If you examine relegions, this is the essence whether be it Christianity,Islam etc.
Hinduism teaches you to accept the oneness in all ie love all.
The crux of Hinduism lies in the underlying belief that God exists in one and every being as humans, animals and pervades the entire Universe.
Therefore a Hindu does not have the right to hurt a fellow being as its equal to hurting the God in them.
The most important message is Love. Love in a divine way by giving, sharing and caring in the most selfless manner and not by restricting your love to your near and dear only.
There are many out there who need the Divine love in you irrespective of the fact that they might be a Christian or a Muslim or a Jew.They are all human beings and deserve to be loved.
With love alone can nations stop these wars, sufferings end and equality established in the world order. To love is the responsibility of a true Hindu.
The last and most important point is that Hinduism believes in the Law of Karma and Rebirth.Any action good or bad will result in a spiritual deposit and withdrawal.Gods grace always exists when Good is done and vice versa.
A Hindu has to be reborn again until he becomes free from desires and wants the Lord only. Then Lord will free him from the cycle of birth and death.
My apologies for making this long. But Hinduism is not a relegion but a way of life and cannot be explained through words but only through experience.

the most important thing(and misunderstood) is that there is only ONE god, the supreme creator. all the other hindu dieties are symbolic representations of the different aspects of the supreme creator. that is why they have many heads, arms, legs, etc. each thing has a significant meaning.
they believe that in you are reincarnated until you can obtain salvation (moksa). you have to learn specific lessons/knowledge and have good karma to obtain moksa
there is also karma. karma is basically for every action/choice you make there are consequences. if you do good, you get good karma. if you do bad, then you get bad karma. you must have only good karma to obtain moksa. karma also decides your next life. mostly good karma = rich person, little good karma= poor person, bad karma =insect, really bad karma= plants
those are the very basics

It is vast. Importance can vary from person to person.
I believe the beliefs are
Hindus believe in one god and still pray to millions of god form mythological stories as manifestation of one.
Hindu worship god in idols to feel god in front of him.
Hindus believe humans can become one with god by meditation, selfless karma, worshipping god or by knowing god as bhudda did.
Hindus believe in Gita (song by god) as sacred. Gita is regarded as sole meaning of Vedas.
Hindus woship nature as part of god.
However there is no compulsion in hinduism.
