Start small, and then keep building your credit by following the principle of "Borrow, then pay back on time. Borrow again, pay back on time again. Repeat".
Start with a small purchase (on credit) from a Jewelry Store. Then request a card from a department store like JC Penny. Always, always, always pay back on time. If you don't really have access to the money, then don't try to buy it on credit. After JC Penny, add Mervin's or Macy's. Then add a gas card or two like Chevron and Shell. Use the cards (just a little at a time) and then pay back on time. Then after you have done this for 6 to 12 months, apply for a Visa or a Mastercard or both. Then keep open, but do not use the other credit cards except maybe once a year. Keep the balance at zero. Instead use only the Visa and/or the Master Card...and ALWAYS pay back on time. Keep the balances very low or at zero. Your line of credit and your ability to get more credit will grow if you have "open" accounts with either low or zero balances.
Good luck. Be careful, credit cards "feel" like play money and can be deceiving. Many folks have lost their shirts by becoming careless with credit.

Usually if you are in college there are credit card people everywhere. But, if not you can go online and go to the major credit card websites and apply. Also you won't have credit until you have a credit card or a store card. But again no credit is BAD credit. You can start with a Old Navy, or Macy's card but watch your spending. Having these cards will help to establish your credit history.

Go to your local bank and open a savings account. Build it up to around $500. Ask the bank about a card tied to your savings. Or get a debit check card with a checking account. Looks like a credit card, but it actually takes money from your checking account. Be sure to keep good records so you don't overdraw.

My mom warned me about credit and despise her advice I abused credit. Notice I called it abused. If you choose credit, don't abuse it. Think about it; the money you gonna or suppose to pay the creditor will be payed over a period of time, why not PRETEND you're paying the creditor then purchase the item. But no! we want the item now.

Yes. They should be mailing them to you soon. They will get your name once you buy something expensive. You can fill out an application for a gas one of local store. Be careful to pay off as soon as possible and only use in real crisises.
