I have a broken tooth too but have to wait until my appointment on Monday morning. I have found Ibuprofen is more effective than even prescription pain-killers.
The best solution would probably be a crown, although this has a fixed price of almost £200 at any NHS dentist (this price includes your check-up and any other treatment needed).

There is not a lot you can do to soothe the pain at home except just avoiding the chipped tooth when you eat or drink. (Try a straw.)
We can't really answer what treatment would be needed without seeing your tooth. Since it is sensitive to foods (cold, especially), we know that it has chipped into the dentin at least, but maybe it's all the way to the nerve. Some chips can just be polished off, but this does not sound like it would be adequate for you. You will need something to cover up the sensitive area. If you are lucky, some bonding will do the trick and it would be $200 or less. If you are very unlucky, you will need the nerve out of the tooth and this could cost $500-600 in that tooth. Then, it will have to be either repaired (as above) or crowned for $700-1,000.

I'm a dentist.
If the tooth is sensitive, it is very likely that you have chipped off enough of it where you now have dentin exposed. That would explain your sensitivity, unless of course you traumatized the tooth to the point where the pulp is inflamed.
If you've chipped it that much, it is possible for your doctor to place a filling on the tooth, but you would be better served by a crown. Large fillings on anterior teeth tend to fail, and the larger they are, the quicker they fail. Either treatment would likely alleviate the sensitivity, provided the pulp is healthy.

i had a tooth that was chiped right in the front , on top. they basicly grinded it untill it was about half of what it was supose 2 b. then they smoothed enough 2 add some porcaline (sorry spelled wrong) 2 it untill it matched the one next 2 it. i'm not sure how much it was because i was only like 13 at the time but it turned out great u cant tell that its fake unless u look really close, & in bright light. i'm sure that price is going 2 very depending on your insurence. for the pain just use lots of extra strength ambasol, it doesnt taiste great but it will help, & take tylonol or advil. i lived on that stuff untill i could get it fixed. i hope this helps.

and there is temporary filling you can use! You can find it in Wal-Mart. Because the dentist will not be able to make an appointment with you right away.
I don't think it will take the dentist to long to fix your tooth. He will just put a filling on it of the same color as your tooth, unless it is really bad, and you will need a crown (cap).

Maybe the dentist chipped your tooth when extracting your wisdom tooth. Plus when you get your wt cut out they can hurt for awhile. All 4 of mine were cut out at the same time and I still felt pain in them a year later.

A chip shouldn't normally hurt cos it's just the enamel and the enamel has no blood supply. Is it just sensitive? If so, the "pain" should go within a couple of days. But depending on the size of the chip it should just be a simple filling, depnding on what tooth, will determine white or silver if nhs

no idea as to prices, but you probably need a cap if the whole thing is chipped off, if its just a partial chip, with both sides still there, you could get by with a filling. They cost about $120 in Canada. and last about 5 years, if you are careful

If you are really in so much pain don't forget if you get in touch with NHS Direct they will give you info of the nearest emergency dentist. In the meantime suggest Ibroprofen with paracetamol in between doses. Treatment will depend on many factors - leave that to the expert.
Good Luck and hope you get it seen to soooooooooon.

Tooth pain is BAD. My dentist had me take 800 mg ibuprofen every 4 hours but make sure you have food on your stomach. Call the number to your dentist "in case of emergency" and ask him/her. I believe a veneer is how they will fix it.
