Are you taking any sedatives for sleep or during the day? If so, that can cause a person who normally remembers there dreams, not to.

If you wake up in the morning and go back to sleep again, when you wake up again, you're more likely to remember what you were dreaming during that time. Especially if it's a short period of time. This is because under normal conditions, you'll spend more time in REM sleep. It seems to me that the more times you wake up, the more you'll remember - at least in the morning, after you've had a full nights sleep.

During the night, you will cycle through the different stages. If you sleep well, you'll spend most of your time in the deeper stages of sleep which are dreamless. When wake up the first time, you might be coming straight out of a deeper stage in which case you're not likely to remember anything. Any time this happens, you're more likely to feel more tired than you would if you were coming out of REM. Using an alarm clock to wake up will have that effect if the timing is right. If you wake up naturally, you're more likely to spend some time in REM before waking up.

I do know that marijuana has a big effect on that. You're a lot less likely to remember anything. I don't remember exactly why. Alcohol will cause you to get less REM sleep and ironically, so will a lot of the over the counter sleeping pills. I'm sure there are plenty of others. Post-traumatic stress is another one. Some of the ones experiencing that won't dream at all.
