I'm not afraid but it doesn't mean I don't keep alert to my surroundings. I know what to do if attacked by someone and being aware is no 1 on the list.

Interesting question. Living in New York City, which was rated as the safest American city--I can honestly say that I never have felt menaced or afraid walking around Manhattan at night. It's quite pleasant. (And unlike some of your other respondents, guns are looked down on here--and are totally not necessary!)

Afraid no but always aware and conscience of my surroundings. I live on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska close to the Kenai River where theres alot of fish. Where theres alot of fish there will be alot of bears. So if I have to walk at night yes I clap, talk and generally act crazy to someone that might be watching but I havent suprised a bear and her cubs so it must be working!!! We also have alot of Moose. They also dont like me getting in between their calves and their mothers!!! So in this situation that I,m more than happy to be in ( I love the Kenai Peninsula and Alaska!!!) No I,m not afraid but aware of my surroundings but if I was in a different situation like a flat tire in a bad part of town in a city I would still be looking for a "bear" also. I would not walk like a "victim" and would be aware of my surrounding. Not walk next to "shady or "shadowy" areas and be as ready as I can to react in the best way in whatever situation I sometimes find myself in. You cant let fear stop you from enjoying life but you cant be naive or unaware of whats around you anymore. Depends where you are I guess. Hope this helps. Good luck in life!! P.S. I remember hearing on the news the other day that Alaska has got the record now of crimes against women. Murder by a person that she knew. So like the guy from New York Its not the city or the place. Just always be aware. The brain is always the best tool and weapon a person can have!!! Not guns cause that can be taken away but not your "Spirit"

No.

I live almost in the center of a large city & go walking alone at night quite frequently. The neighborhood is not well lit, either.

Never had any problem.
Never carry any weapon, just a flashlight.
And yes, the most important defensive weapon is your mind.

I never walk alone. My buddies Smith and Wesson are always with me.

No, not at all. Because I never go anywhere unless my two friends go with me. Their names? Smith, and Wesson.

Somewhat, but it depends where. I live in a really safe, small city, but that doesn't mean I'm not afraid.

I feel less afraid if I talk to myself. Also others won't think your alone if you are talking and if they do think you are alone, they will think your crazy and leave you alone
