This is a great question.
I think that the relationships don't really start out bad. I think that they go bad over a period of time.
What I have seen is a weak man (who does not know how to be a real man) try to make himself stronger by picking on a woman. He starts out by belittling her about things - her looks, house cleaning, cooking - and goes on the get more and more serious as time passes.
The woman slowly loses her self-respect. The man she loves is telling her she is worthless and no one else would ever want her. She slowly begins to believe the things he says. After a while the physical abuse starts. She thinks she deserves the treatment he gives her.
Remember, this occur over a long period of time. She has no idea that things are getting worse and worse each time. It is a form of brain-washing. She finally begins to believe him since he knows here better than anyone else does.

I give respect to everyone. It's their choice if they want to keep it or loose it. Many women want to help the person that is mistreating them, don't forget that most women are more emotional than men. Most men can't understand why a woman would stay with someone like that, because we are more physical (women prefer cuddling over sex, men are the opposite).

I think respect matters. You need to show a woman that you respect her enough to treat her like an equal. The women who are dating the guys that hit them, are trying to get out of the relationship but they are scared and confused.

There was a psychological test done regarding your question and the finding were interesting because it showed that woman were more responsive to negative impulses. In other words when they were told something negative they were more likely to positively respond versus being kind and curtious. Of course this only showed a initial response to a stranger and does not indicate response in a long term relationship. I personally have used "negative comments" and have excellent responses from woman. It is believe it is a sign of dominance.

Some women don't have high enough self-confidence to demand respect. Despite who ANYONE is, you should treat them with respect. So yes, you should treat all women with respect.

what "women"-dont u mean "girls/" when people are young, male or female, most (not all)tend to go for shallow things, like looks, reading into a person virtues that dont actually exist.in time, they find out and move on.if the people ur talking about are teens or early 20's,then u are seeing nothing more than the confusion and shallowness, lack of experience of youth.unless u've never made a mistake, lighten up!when i was young,i fell for plenty a lovely face ,only to find nothing substantial,no character to back it up.as i grew in life experience,i matured, and eventually married a man of integrity, courage and honr, who treats me like a jewel.he made his own errors in judgement, before he married me.time is ur best friend,u'll meet the right woman in time.till then, dont be bitter or cynical.few meet the love of theuir life at 21 !!!!(i assume ur young). source-4 decades of life.

Well, my daughter is just getting out of a bad reletionship--he was just terrible to her verbally and I think she put up with alot of it because of low self esteem. Men see this sometimes and like to play on it and be in control--and make the g/f feel like they are never going to find anyone better--but this isn't true. Then again-some girls don't think anything of verbal absuse.
