It is not indigenous to a continent. It's a compound. Cyclopentasiloxane is a colorless, ordorless, transparent, nongreasy silicone fluid. It has a low viscosity and surface tension and a relatively high vapor pressure which allows the majority of the silicone portion to evaporate from the surface to which it is applied. It is used in a variety of cosmetic products (at concentrations ranging from < 1.0% up to >50%) as a hair conditioning agent, a skin emollient or a solvent. Studies indicate that cyclopentasiloxane is not irritating to the skin and is not readily absorbed through the skin.

A review by the Expert Panel of the CIR (1991) concluded that cyclomethicone (a mixture of cyclic dimethylpolysiloxane compounds including cyclopentasiloxane) is safe for use in cosmetics at the current concentrations of use. In December 2005, the CIR looked at available new data and decided that the data were sufficient to re-evaluate cyclopentasiloxane use in cosmetics. This process is currently ongoing.
