You have lots of good advice above (except for the "eat it" comment by a moron).
I would also suggest making sure there are no electronic gizmos that maybe frightening the kitten from the litter pan. Clock radios/alarms.., or a fan..., even washing machines or dryers, etc.., anything that may give the kitten a start.
You might also place a small litter-pan downstairs in an inconspicuous place.

How old is the kitten? often times they cannot get used to small clumping litter, so use the pine litter for a couple of weeks to keep helping her with the transition. Also, try using a closed litter box, with the top. Often times they want their privacy. One of my cats will run off if I accidentally walk in on her. Also, if you need to, try to keep her in a very large box with just her litter, food and water for a couple of days. Sometimes they learn that all they need is right there, so when they are free to have a more open space, they will seek out what they need and use them. Good luck and have fun with your new kitty!

maybe its the location of the litter box!! cats like private areas to poo, prehaps its too open! I would suggest moving it and letting the poor little thing get used to a) being without her mom b) being with u c) pooing in a litter box in the first place. Also give her lots of attention as she will need it to feel secure

Could be the kitten doesn't know what the litter box is for.
Put some of the poop in it and leave it there, then keep taking the kitten to the litter box.The cat mom is not there to teach the kitten , so you have to do it.Be patient.

Do you have the covered kind of litter-box? Some cats have trouble using an open litterbox. If you don't have one, buy the kind with the covering over the top and see if that works.

My cat had the same problem. I almost got rid of him because he wouldn't stop pooping everywhere!
We took him to the vet instead. He was actually sick and the vet told us about a special food to give him and then he was fine!
Kitten tummies are very sensative and if she was born in a barn it's possible she may have gotten into something. Take her to the vet or at least phone them for more advice.

Your cat seriously needs to go to petsmark so they can potty train her.ask your local pet store if they have a special program for your cat to stop doing that.Another thing is discipline the cat every time she does that try hitting her gently and try scolding at her but don't be rough.try to make her do signs so you know when shes going to the bathroom so you can get up and take her to her litter box.
