I find the conversation just stops when some Christians say that atheism is impossible. I'm willing to live with the notion that it's unprovable, because there are different standards of evidence and proof. But to say that I don't believe what I say I believe is, in itself, beyond belief.

This cannot have sprung from the minds of these parrots. Who started this maddening craze that disbelieves in disbelief?

Maybe they are referring to parts of the Bible that infer all people recognize God through creation (Romans 1). Thus all know God and cannot be atheists, even if they say they are. I don't hold this view, but it might be what they are thinking.

I have wondered this myself, ironically for an entirely different reason. I am Jewish and I have found that some Christians seem entirely unable to understand that I don't believe Jesus was anything special whatsoever and that I regard him the same way I regard Zeus. I am sure the same thing happens only more extreme when it comes to atheism. It is very difficult for people who believe so strongly in religion to understand such a radically different idea. Thus they lie to themselves to help let the idea fit their mental state. They can't conceive of a world which is godless, thus they don't be live anyone else can. Thus atheists must really believe in G-d in some capacity. I want to make sure it is clear that is not my opinion just my guess as to how they think.

WESLEY H: I can assure you that there are few if any scientists right now actively trying to prov G-d exists or not. I am pretty sure the number is something you can count on your fingers.

I have never heard of this, but it is interesting though. They are so offended by the fact that there are Atheists out there they have come up with another way to deal with this offense to there belief by believing that what offends them does not or can not exist. It's sort of what happens when they are presented with the errors found in the Bible, they either ignore them or twist the meaning to fit what they believe.

I don't know who started it, but it's a common play against atheists. Honestly, I think it's just a cop-out, leaving the other side to walk away from the conversation without feeling they've lost face.

I have no idea, but it is certainly silly and I wish it would go away. The difference between religion and atheism is very simple: atheism works -- one applies logic to any situation and gets correct answers. Religion, however, does not work: one cannot apply logic, absent evidence to which to apply it, so can get no answers at all.

Just tell them you know they're faking it, the whole I believe in God thing. After all how do you just make yourself believe in something that isn't there? This is a smoke-screen tactic to draw attention away from their false belief. Its denial and its not surprising Christians would take to it. Its their tactic for nearly everything.

It wasn't me. I'm a Christian, but I have a friend who has been an atheist her whole life. She has been exposed to God (through a local church), but she simply doesn't believe in His existence. I am friends with her because we have other things in common - interests in backpacking, horseback riding, etc.

I understand your point, but can you now understand why we get upset or offended when atheists tell us there is no God and we are brainwashed for believing there is? I can accept an atheist's right to be a non-believer. Why can't the atheists on this site accept my right to believe without mocking or insulting me?

I can't answer that question, but I also wonder if these people know what BELIEVE means. I mean, if you tried to make them believe something else, they'd go bonkers. You can't MAKE yourself believe something. Either you do or you don't. But they think that if they keep beating you over the head with a crucifix, somehow you will magically believe something that goes against reason.

Im a Christian, and other Christians who say that make me very angry. I think if you dont believe in Chrst and his teaching, then you dont. So I just hope people dont get an impression that we are all that way. Cuz if you are not saved, thats your problem.
