Mike, I hope you have nerves of steel and complaints flow off your shouldar like water on a duck's back. Because you are trying to break into a nerve racking business. I live in a very small town, and I assisted a woman years ago with hers. First thing you need to do is get some nerve pills, and some comfortable shoes. Take a pill and get to walking....go to the florists, bridal shops, caterers, bakeries, photographer's studios.
Have some very elegant cards made up, and start the process. You need to get your name out there. Do you know anyone getting married anytime soon? If so, do their wedding for free, you may have to do this a couple of times. Or give them a price that covers just the bare essentials like gas, long distance calls..
Word of mouth is your best advertisement. You have got to court these vendors to give out your cards and recommend me you. Bring them a little gift along with your card. Make up a book of some of your work, it doesn't have to be only weddings, Another thing do not ever leave the house looking like a slob. Never ever be caught without your "kiss butt" face. Once you are established you can if you are really good, you then can pick and choose who you work for, but until then to pay the bills you are going to be kissing a lot of tail....
You need to take basic courses for sewing, food prep, flower decorating, event planning, because you are there to make sure that wedding comes off without a hitch. You could end up sewing the bride in her dress because the zipper broke(happened to me) a heel broke off a shoe, the cake loppsided(vanilla wafers and icing) the bride is late, the father of the bride is drunk(not coffee, you will only get a hyper drunk) the bridesmaid is making out with the bestman.....the bride can't stay out of the bathroom because of morning sickness(crackers and flat 7up)
You have got to prepared for everything, if you haven't been to too many weddings, get movies with wedding themes..like the Wedding Planner, and watch and learn....Please, I am not trying to scare you off your dream, as a matter of fact, if I have been thinking about doing it myself. Just a thought in the back of my mind, because the lady I assisted did somethings that I just didn't like, or didn't do enough for her clients. The bride and her family own you for awhile till at least till the floor is vaccuum and the rice is swept up. God love you, and I wish you all the luck in the world, don't let anyone tell you it's a bogus profession, it's a honorable one, and believe you me it's hard work, but to finally sit down after the happy smiling couple leaves for the honeymoon, you can take pride in your job, that you made another bride feel like a princess for her most special day...and that feels damn good!
God bless us all............

Frankly, wedding planners are in my opinion, totally bogus (a bogus profession) and you say you have qualifications. Dear, there are no particular qualifications for this bogus line of work so I don't know what talents you think you possess. YOU have to do your own advertising, have business cards, build a reputation, etc. Good luck, but again, the world could really do with out wedding planners!

A lot of it just comes from experience. If you really want to take a course, look at the Association of Bridal Consultants. They offer some decent classes on every aspect of being a Bridal Consultant. The one thing I would really recommend is getting a website. Almost all of my leads have come through my website, probably around 95% of them. You don't have to spend thousands on it either. You could do something as simple as a Yahoo Geocities site that is ad-free rather than going to a professional website designer and spending tons of money. I've put links in the source area to both the Association of Bridal Consultants and my own website so you can see how a simple website looks. I've done all of my web stuff myself with friendly suggestions from my friends on how to improve it.
