From ancient times (e.g., in Egypt for many centuries BC) cats have been part of domestic households, farms, warehouses, etc., initially for pest control (after all, who would want a whole year's grain harvest to be consumed by hoards of rats and mice?!). Then, as their aesthetic atttraction was recognised, they became well loved domestic pets. Now (at least here in the UK) they out number dogs as the most popular animal companion - as some people now tend to call dogs and cats.

Cats were only "domesticated" about five thousand years ago when Egyptians started to raise grain crops in the fertile area around the Nile. Our house cats are all descended from a desert cat living in the Sahara.

They really were not really "domesticated" even then. They came in contact with people because they were after the mice in the grain fields (mouse diet is seeds from grains).

The people were happy to have the cats around as they kept the mice from ruining stored grain supplies. Eventually people began to like cats for their sociability, their beauty, and the pleasure of having their company.

Cats are awesome, and are great companions. If you take good care of them, and keep them healthy, they can live to be twenty years old. Cats are playful, and fun to watch play and jump and make good mousers too.
They are affectionate, they love to cuddle, and their Purr is soothing to most.
They are therapeutic too, cats and dogs have been taken into nursing homes so the elderly can visit with these animals, statistics have shown that even petting a cat can lower blood pressure, and provide company to the lonely, thus making their life more meaningful, and longer.
