Well, I don't know about defending to the death... I have youngsters to think of.
And it strikes me as ironic that you quote a French person while asking how American we are...
But I believe in free speech.

i agree, monsieur voltaire, except for those that advocate hate, because i don't believe in rights without responsibility. if you don't take responsibility upon yourself for the well-being of your society and in fact you try to diminish it by preaching hate against other members of the society, then that society owes you nothing and you forfeit your rights.
EDIT
"Voltaire may not have known it, but he was an American deep down inside :)"
right there is an example of a very offensive thing to say.

This is not a public Forum. The constitutional rights of free speech are not necessarily allowed here. Instead we are all bound to live under the contract of useage that Yahoo had us agree to when we decided to begin using this forum. When it becomes too constrained, we'll all traipse off elsewhere to re-start the dialogue. As for now, it seems free enough.

Partly.
But as soon as some person with thin skin reads something they consider insults them, they complain and the understaffed Yahoo team pull the item in question.
There is no enquiry and no appeal to reason.
In my experience the Jesus freaks are the worst - they think swear words like **** are extremely offensive. Yet they encourage their 8 year old children to go to Sunday school to hear stories about people being turned into pillars of salt or fed to lions.

I would not defend anyone's right to say they like having sex with little children, and thus I'm against totally free speech.
An American is anyone born in North Anerica, Central America, and South America.
I am a citizen of the USA.

I think YA gives that privilege and freedom to anyone accessing it over the Internet.
I don't think it matters if you are in China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Sudan, Philippines, Japan, India... or anywhere in the world! You have the right to ask a question, BUT!! At the same time, you should be tolerant enough to accept all sorts of answers from all sorts of individuals!

A lot of Americans are on Yahoo Answers like me for instance. This site is classical example of free speech. It gives you a good feeling to be able to have total expressions without fear of repercussions.

Yeah, you're a real tough guy. Out there in cyberspace. You're also a liar.
He does advocate hate, Jewishgirl. He said he was going to wipe his but with pages of holy books of various religions and Yahoo took the question off. This guy is nothing but a punk that hides behind his computer screen.
