I'm looking at getting a 2001 Prius Hybrid. I don't know anything about this car and don't really feel comfortable buying first year this car was made.

The only problem with older hybrids are the batteries. Like all things that require battery usage the charge wears down over the years. For example my iPod and cell phone don't have as long of a lifetime anymore. On the Prius you'd probably notice this in decreased performace and possibly gas mileage. It will never leave you stranded, rest assured Prius' as well as most Toyotas are very reliable cars. If you decide to purchase an 01 Prius I suggest that you purchase an extended warranty that includes a replacement battery.

However if you just looking for a fuel efficient car may I suggest a Corolla or Civic. Also diesels are a good option. I don't know if you may have heard but hybrids as well as most petrol cars don't reflect EPA ratings in real world driving conditions. However diesel cars do. Diesel cars are also reliable and easier to maintain. If you are looking for a diesel may I suggest the TDI Jetta or Golf.

Here is a site with owner reviews:

I don't know anyone with a 2001 Prius. I have a 2001 Insight. We love it. Make sure that you do your homework on the warranty, especially the computer system which switches the engine power from battery to gas and back and the battery array. There are some quirky things with hybrids, and you are correct to be wary of the first model year.

The Toyota Echo gets great mileage. I have a friend who says hers gets 40 mpg. There are a couple of other models of Toyotas and Hondas which are not hybrids but get great mileage. I prefer Hondas but Toyotas go a long way, too.

Your money would be best spent on Yarus by Toyota Fit by Honda and my favorite Nissan Versa. New small Nissan is feature packed "NEW" less than 18,000 dollars .
Did I mention Toyota Prius four year old battery's might fail at any time now and cost a fortune!
Also the new car will come with a full warranty? try all three versions of Versa manual automatic and the best CVT transmission. Blue tooth technology hands free phone system good sound system with sub woofer.

Conventional wisdom is usually not to purchase a vehicle in its first year of production but having looked at several auto review sites I didn't see too many negatives listed for the 01 Prius.

I would suggest though, going to your local library and picking up Consumer Reports Auto Buying Guide for 2001 and carefully reviewing the data and repair history for the vehicle.

The Toyota Prius is awesome! The only trouble is actually getting your hands on one, or I should say, the particular package that you want. Apparently, Toyota is churning em' out as fast as they can, and they are WAY short.

I would buy a Prius. Why don't you buy a newer model if you are uncomfortable with an 01? My Prius customers are very satisfied.
