I'm a big fan of Ford's straight 6 engines. Especially the 240 and the 300. Among the more modern engines, my vote goes to the 3 litter OHV engine, used in the Taurus, among others. The most problematic engine I ever had in a Ford was a 2 litter 4 cylinder in an early Pinto.

The 302 (or 5.0 liter), 351 (both Windsor and Cleveland), and the 390 were all among Ford's best V8s. I particularly like the 302 because it is plentiful and therefore, easy to get parts for and easy to modify for more power. It's also, in my humble opinion, the best balance of horsepower to weight, in terms of Ford factory engines.
The flathead was revolutionary for its time but it was seriously inefficient. There are companies today that actually make modifications to flatheads to turn it into a modern high performance engine. But that route is way more expensive than rebuilding a junkyard 302 or simply buying a 302 or one of its larger cousins above as a crate motor.

RE:
Best and worst engines Ford has ever made?
What were the best and worst engines Ford has ever made as far as durability/reliability/power goes?
In my opinion I think that the 390ci V8 engine is the best engine Ford has ever made.

I've forgotten all about the Cadillac 6-8-4 V8 engine, those were terrible engines, remember the crappy GM Diesel engines of the late 70's/early 80's, those were awful engines. Mercury Capri, Ford Mustang II, almost any American car made from 1974-85.

I have a 302 V8 in a 1981 Ford F100. 289,000 miles - engine has never been worked on except for normal mainenance and one timing chain. I was afraid the chain might break and ruin the engine. I have a 1966 Mustang convertible. 289 V8 w/ 166,000 miles. Same story. No oil usage, no valve noise. My favorite engine is the 300 CI straight six. I have a 1995 F150 with that engine and is is smoother than anything on the road. I have a new F150 with the 5.4 and it is NOT smooth. Idle is rough and POOR fuel mileage. Reliability is great so far and should be for a $35K vehicle. As with any vehicle, maintenance and the way you drive means EVERYTHING.

The old Ford FE`s like a 390 did not make the power on the street like a 396 ss did, But would out last it under hard use. Just thank of the old 427 Fords in 66 & 67 in the 24 hour and 12 hour races, hard and long

The best engine i think ford produced (Designed by Yamaha) would be the SHO V6 :-p strong running motor that pushed 220 hp for a V6 Ford. Sure the motor needed its 60k tune up which isn't so bad if you are a car guy. They also made a 3.4 V8 from 1996 to 1999
The SHO v6 was used in the Taurus SHO

I've had terrific success out of the 302 V8. Great long lasting truck engine, pretty easy to work on, I'm on my second truck and I'm 42 years old...they last a long time. This one is a 1995. My previous truck was a 1988. My Dad had it in his truck too, a 1978, which lasted until traded in 1991.
