Why not show this cat some compassion. He/she obviously wants to be with you. If this cat keeps trying to get into your home, there is a big possibility he/she doesn't have a home.
If there is a reason that you can't/don't want this cat, then i would suggest that you try to identify wheter the cat has an owner. i.e how often does the cat come round, does the cat scavenge for food, does the cat look healthy? If you don't think the cat has an owner, you can try contacting the cat protection league and they should be able to take the cat in or point you in the right direction.

I thoroughly agree with the first answer. Though scaring a cat is NOT the way to get rid of it. Do find another way to go about it not endangering the animal.....but obviously it is looking for a home, and in this case YOUR home.
Cats find their owners....if that is not desired by you, which your question connotates, then the humane thing is to find a home for it. The pound may not be the answer for it. Place an ad regarding this feline in a local weekly paper......we all have lessons to learn, and even the smallest thing such as a cat bothering you, can be resolved easily. Find a home for the cat that is NOT your own abode.
Then Voila! Problem solved!!!
Cheers to you for caring enough to request in this format. Scaring is never a tactic used with an insistent canine or feline......they know what they want, and though I do NOT know why this cat wats you as its owner, it surely seems to. Just do your best, you never know where fate may lead you.

Be honored, cats do not go to just anyone, this cat picked you, why not take it in and it will be your companion, they are great animals, I have 5, I never thought I would be a cat person, but I am now. I am even involved with cat rescue and I help the outside cats. Why would you not want a cat that has picked you to live with. I know I would be thrilled.

If it's a stray, keep it! If you can't or don't want to, try taking it to a shelter or finding it a loving home.
If it's someone else's cat, talk to them about it. They really shouldn't be letting their cat roam anyway.
Now deterring him depends on where he's trying to get in. If it's a door or two, try putting citrus (rinds would work) or ground pepper around the door.
There are also deterrents you could put by the doors that are of a more electronic kind. See some here;

One neighborhood cat found a way into our house by climbing up inside the walls, then down through an air vent. Once we figured out what it was doing, we blocked the entrance, forcing it to turn around and go back out while we beat on the walls around it. Noisy, uncomfortable, and effective. He never returned.

Cats choose their owners, so you should feel privileged that somebody likes you. Give it a warm bed outside if you want and fresh food and water. Be nice and get it neutered in the future

Locate a hunting supply shop in your nearby area, ask for cougar urine.
You can apply this to several areas around your property (the smell isn't really noticable to people, it's the animals with the more evolved noses that will notice it) and the cat will stay away. Over time you may need to reapply it now and then, but it's a great natural defense.

If you don't wanna just give him a good home outside or both outsidfe and inside...fix him.. and he will keep snakes and bugs or other rodents away ...........you can get a sqiurt gun ,a super super duper saoker....or you can set little racoon traps and set them free somewhere that looks like he would survive there, unless you have a no kill shelter..meaning they won't just kill him.
