All these people saying "don't do it" I guess are more knowledgable about your 5 year old's condition than your doctor is, hmmmm. . . . . . . and cheaper too, I'll bet.
Not knowing what type of enema the doctor prescribed, there is a Fleet brand enema in the drug stores that is made especially for children and one for babies. These are disposable and easily administered by following the directions on the box.
I know that a 5 year old can be a wiggle worm and that the box says to lay on your left side. I doubt you will get a 5 year old to lay on his left side long enough to be given an enema. If that is the case, then sit down and put a towel across your lap. Lay your 5 year old on the towel with his legs hanging down, this gives you easy access to his rectum to administer the enema.
You can lay your arm down his back to help hold him still while you use your thumb and finger to spread his butt cheeks. Insert the nozzle of the enema and GENTLY squeeze the bottle until the majority of the contents have been injected into your 5 year old.
You remove the nozzle and then you can use your hand to hold his cheeks together to help him hold the enema for as long as is necessary for it to have a good effect. That is usually from 5 to 15 minutes.
Once the time has passed then lift him gently (still holding the cheeks together to prevent leaks) and sit him on the toilet to allow him to expel the contents of his bowels along with the enema.
If you don't use a pre-made disposable enema, then you would do the same thing using a bulb enema syringe along with some warm water and a little salt to maintain the chemical balance of his body. With this type, usually two to three bulbs full will be needed to have a good result because it doesn't have the stimulating chemicals in it that the disposable has that aids in evacuation.
Just be loving and gentle with your little one and everything will be just fine.
As a little boy, I was the youngest of four and back in those days the enema was the cure-all for everything from a cold to being cranky to being lazy. I've had many an enema and it hasn't hurt me once, psychologically or physically.
Good luck and I hope your 5 year old gets to feeling better.

Follow the directions on the Fleet enema box. They make one for children. Read all the information before you begin.
If the child is timid about this, I don't think you should use an enema.
You can consult the pharmacist or pediatrician about what to do.
I certainly would change the child's diet to include foods which naturally cause regularity. Apples are good and most kids like applesauce.

Why the hell would you want to force an enema on a 5 year old.

Did your doctor tell you to do this? If he\she did, you should call them and ask the best way. If your child is very uncomfortable already maybe you should take him\her to the emergency room and have them do it.

Why do you have to do that ? Don't do that to a 5 year old. That's almost like violating them. There are so many advances in healthcare now that I'll bet there is something else you can do besides that. Don't do it.

I agree with vik - DON'T do that. There is no need to and it could cause this child severe physiological damage. Take them to a doctor if they are having problems but DON'T to that to your child.
