Why does everyone assume it is to be judgmental?

Oh yeah being Muslim isn't a race, it's a religion.

I don't think asking the question is not rude. It's how you ask that can be rude.

Because I am genuinely curious, I generally ask what the person's background or culture is. Ask about the origin of their surname or whatever. I've always gotten an answer, and have yet to have anyone react negatively to the question.

Depends on who that someone is. If it's a stranger, or a person who is just an acquaintance, then yes, I think the question is rude. On the other hand, if it's someone you are becoming friends with, and he/she wants to learn more about you, then no, not rude.

No it's not rude. Most people are proud of their race and religion.

Not necessarily rude, but I don't see much of what it would have to do with anything. So a bit unnecessary, almost makes you think they're taking something else into consideration, that maybe they shouldn't be, when inquiring with you.

It is only appropriate if the discussion leads to it. For example, the person talks about a family tradition, a country they visted or used to live in, etc. Then you can politely ask "What nationality are you?"

I used to live in Mexico and whenever I mention it, people ask if I'm Mexican. (I'm not.)

Yes. I would probably say something completely false, just to make the person who asked the question feel like the idiot that he/she is.

yes - what is the point of such a question? their own curiosity at their inability to stick you in a category? wouldn't it be much more interesting if they'd asked your heritage?

No, just tilt your head to the side and say, "interesting, hey, what nationality are you?" Not rude at all.

Yes, I do. Unless you work for the census, it is none of anyone's business. if you are fascinated with a person's appearance, you can say, you are so uniquely beautiful...but to say WHAT ARE YA!? HUH?! tactless.

If you don't know them...YES. I can see it now.... Excuse me sir It's been bugging me to death to know, but are you a Taliban Towel-Head or a peace loving down to earth Muslim? I just have to know because if you are down with the Taliban I don't want to sit next to you on the plane. :0)
