Can I paint dots like Matisse, call it simplistic and make a million? Assuming I can keep a straight face that is

It's the customers who create the freak show of modern art. They only buy it as a status symbol to show they are "vrai" culture vultures.

The center of modern art is Pablo Picasso and his cubism. What Picasso did so successfully was fully understand the superstitiousness and fear in African art. If you live in a primitive culture ruled by the local witchdoctor, what kind of art serves its purpose? Ugly art to scare the audience. And PIcasso was scared by modern life and the art audience is also.

So that is the purpose of the ugly, smearing, inartistic and amateurish modern art -- to show modern life is scary to anyone who is superstitious, ugly to anyone who places faith above reason.

It's something of a wail of panic from the innumerate.
