Losing more than about 2 lbs per week will make you feel awful and put your body into "starvation mode," so your target is a bit aggessive. Here are some thoughts on how to lose and maintain weight.

There is no site specific way of losing fat... the old myth about working your abs to burn belly fat isn't true. To get rid of love handles, you need to lose overall fat. That happens with exercise and watching your diet. More on that below.

The most effective way to lose fat is aerobic exercise in the "moderate" fat-burning range, ideally first thing in the morning before you eat. When you wake your body is ready to burn fat and your levels of growth hormone are highest at that time. Later in the day it can take up to 30 minutes just to put your body into a fat-burning mode.

Another overlooked way to burn fat is by lifting weights. Skeletal muscle has very high caloric needs... almost twice that of adipose (fat) tissue. Put on a little muscle and you will burn calories all day even at rest. Be aware that skeletal muscle weighs more, so with this approach you may see your weight increasing while your body fat is melting away. Not realizing this often stresses folks who think they should be losing weight as a measure of fitness. Forget the scale, look in the mirror and you will be happy.

For diet, keep a diary for a couple of weeks counting calories, grams of protein, and grams of fat intake. It is easy with online sources of nutritional information (type the name of the food and calories into the Google search engine) and packaging labels. That will let you quickly figure out where the fat is coming from in your diet.

Fat gives you 9 calories per gram. So take the number of grams of fat, multiply by 9, then calculate what percentage the fat calories are of your total daily calories. Restricting the calories from fat to about 20% of your total intake is ideal for a maintenance diet... that isn't overly restrictive. Of note, you need some fat in your diet. For instance, the body uses fat to produce hormones. Once you have a picture of how to modify your diet, you can drop the diary and just go back to it occasionally if you are wanting to tweek things further.

There is a subset of questions that goes further and asks about "How to get a six-pack?" The answer is the same. Six-packs are 20% abdominal exercise and 80% diet. There is one caveat... abdominal muscles will form in the position that you exercise them, so be certain to pull them tightly toward your spine while doing crunches, etc. Also, during most lifting, the "core is active" which means that you should be stabilizing with contracted abs then too. Fail to do this and the abs will form, but bulging outward and the result is not attractive.

If you are trying to build muscle as a way to lose fat, then you may need to increase total calories and specifically your protein intake. I target about 0.8 g of protein per pound of body weight each day when actively building. That is far more protein than most people need in their diets.

It is possible to lose 20 lbs in less than a month despite what some of the critics here are saying. I did and I'm perfectly healthy but I also became more weight conscious and changed my eating habits and exercise routine after the diet was over in August of 2005. The diet lasted 14 days and I was 219 lbs when I started and 198 lbs when it ended. I currently weight 184 lbs, eat no fast food, use only sugar substitutes, watch my salt intact, drink a gallon of water a day and brisk walk 2-3 miles every morning or evening. Other than these things I eat whatever I want, when I want but in smaller portions and more frequently. If you'd really like to lose the weight, have a strong will and determination then it can be done and I'd be happy to provide you with more information.

You may not lose that much in a month but you will lose some and feel good about it. Basically, you have to exercise your behind off and cut down your food intake. Don't go over your recommended calorie intake (can be found online) and do one hour of an exercise that you like every day.

If you have any health problems, check with your doctor first, of course.

How big are you now? If you're 89 lbs, that might be a problem. If you're 222, it's possible but it still might not be a good idea.

I lost about 40 pounds but it took more like 9 months of changing diet, exercising more, taking better care of myself. And now, a year later, I'm 5 lbs over the 185 I got to.

Good luck. And don't quit.

You don't want any dumb answers? News flash, your question is a dumb one. I am a nutrionest and personal trainer and your method of thinking right now is horrible. You want to lose 22 pounds in one month. Do it, it will not be healthy and you will gain it right back. Naturally? Eat healthy, exercise, you'll get lucky with 10 pounds maybe.

if you want to do it the natural way, im sorry but you probally cant. 20 lbs in one month is really hard, if not physically inpossible. the best thing to do is lose weight slowly, because that means you're going to keep it off. my best advise- serious dieting, like 800-1000 calories a day, and excersie every single day for an hour or two. pilates and running are the best things to do. good luck, i hope this was helpful.

For losing heavy burst weight in a super fast time is actually very simple but it comes at a cost.

You need to eat very very very little. However drink "Alot" of liquid. Take a good dose of ex-lax 3 times a day for a month. You'll lose so much weight youll look like a new person.

I've done it before but it is tough to lose that much in a month. A lot of people will tell you it's not safe but now-a-days....what is? Anyway, I Took multivitimans and ate as few calories as I could get by with. lots of salad-no salad dressing. the roughage will help get rid of anything in your system. do excercises till they absolutely hurt and sting. many many reps, not a lot of weight. most important, roman chair sit-ups...as many as you can do. the tighter you can make your stomach the more weight you will lose rapidly. only other thing I did was drink nothing but lots and lots of water. worked fine and it gets easier to force yourself into the habit after the first week. good luck.

So you know in advance.. losing 20 pds in one month CAN cause damage to your liver and other vital organs. With that in mind .. if you want to lose that much weight in one month .. the only answer is to work out everyday and eat much less than you currently do. There is no magic.. less calories in .. more calories burned make you lose weight. Good Luck ! :)
