I have large mushrooms that grow on the sides of birch trees. They are flat on one side. I have seen them painted, and was wondering the prep work needed to paint them myself.

If the humidity is not too high, they will dry out easily if placed gill side up on a screen. When they are done, they will feel woody.

I have also seen some good results from placing them on a cookie sheet in a warm oven (about 200 degrees F). After they are dried they can be covered with a transparent varnish to seal them before painting.
